    Juan Acosta•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2025•References: 4

Robert Hetzel is a central banker and monetary historian who has written extensively on the history of the Federal Reserve and monetary policymaking in the United States. The Federal Reserve: A New History, his latest contribution to this literature, presents a systematic interpretation of more than a century of US monetary policymaking based on the standard New Keynesian framework, which Hetzel believes to be the correct way to think about monet…

  • Six Decades of Economic Research at the Bank of England

Juan Acosta, Béatrice Cherrier et al.•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 40

This paper discusses the transformation of the content, role, and status of economic research at the Bank of England in the past sixty years. We show how three factors (the policy functions and missions of the Bank, the attitude of its executives toward economics, and its organizational structure) shaped the evolution of in-house economic research at the Bank during three distinctive periods (1960-91; 1992-2007; 2007-14). Our account relies on a …

  • The Transformation of Economic Analysis at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System During the 1960s

Open Access•Juan Acosta, Béatrice Cherrier•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2021

In this paper, we build on data on officials of the Federal Reserve System, oral history repositories, and hitherto underresearched archival sources to unpack the tortuous path toward crafting an institutional and intellectual space for postwar economic analysis within the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. We show that growing attention to new macroeconomic research was a reaction to both mounting external criticisms against the F…

  • International politics must be considered together with climate and fisheries regulation as a driver of marine ecosystems

    Open Access•Gustavo F de Carvalho-Souza, María Ángeles Torres et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2021

Seafood is an essential source of protein globally. As its demand continues to rise, balancing food security and the health of marine ecosystems has become a pressing challenge. Ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) has been adopted by the European Union (EU) Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) to meet this challenge by accounting for the multiple interacting natural and socio-economic drivers. The CFP includes both the implementation of regulato…

  • Peddling Macroeconometric Modeling and Quantitative Policy Analysis: The Early Years of the SSRC’s Committee on Economic Stability, 1959-1963

    Open Access•Juan Acosta, Erich Pinzón-Fuchs•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2019•References: 5

Using the Social Science Research Council’s records, we discuss the two projects that the Committee on Economic Stability carried out during its first three years of existence: (i) the construction of a macroeconometric model (1960-1963) and (ii) the organization of a conference on quantitative policy analysis (1963). In line with the central theme of this special issue, we focus on the effect of the Committee’s activities on public economic disc…

  • Bank Behavior in Large-Scale Macroeconometric Models of the 1960s

Juan Acosta, Goulven Rubin•ARTICLE•History of Political Economy•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 22

In this article we discuss the implementation of a portfolio choice framework and the inclusion of credit rationing by banks in several large-scale macroeconometric models built during the 1960s. We argue that the Fed-MIT-Penn model has a more transparent structure: the structure of the money market is clearer, as is the relationship of its equations with the microeconomic choices of banks. Regarding credit rationing, we found that modelers made …

  • Bathymetry of a new-born submarine volcano: El Hierro. Canary Islands

Open Access•J Rivera, Nuria Hermida et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2014

We present here a bathymetric map of a new underwater volcano which began its growth on 10 October 2011 to the south of El Hierro Island (Canary Is., Spain). The map scale is 1:25,000 and the map covers 210.9 sq. km. In July 2011, the seismic monitoring network of Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN), began to detect an increase in low-intensity earthquakes around El Hierro Island along with ground deformation. This seismic crisis culminat…
