  • Response to Leo Depuydt, “The Alleged Gospel of Jesus's Wife

    Open Access•Karen L King•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2014

Although the production of GJW in modernity ("forgery") is an hypothesis worthy of careful consideration, the arguments of Depuydt are not persuasive. I address only substantive issues here

  • Christianity and Torture

    Karen L King•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of religion…•2013

This chapter considers the religious justifications for and against torture. It also describes the torturous narratives at Christianity's foundations, the notion of redemptive martyrdom, and the various ways in which Christian ideology has challenged as well as supported the torturous suffering of fellows and foes. Torture functions in the absence of the facts or against the facts. Despite legal censure, torture and claims of torture are omnipres…

  • The Place of the Gospel of Philip in the Context of Early Christian Claims about Jesus' Marital Status

    Open Access•Karen L King•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2013

It has long been recognized that one of the main topics of the Gospel of Philip is ritual, including ‘the bridal chamber’, and numerous studies have discussed what practices and attitudes toward sexuality and marriage are implied by this imagery. This article will build on these studies to argue that the Gospel of Philip portrays the incarnate Jesus as actually married (to Mary Magdalene) and it represents that marriage as a symbolic paradigm for…

  • Mary, Gospel of

    Open Access•Karen L King•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

The Gospel of Mary is the only preserved Christian gospel attributed to a woman, namely Mary of Magdala, one of Jesus' most prominent disciples. It illustrates well the diversity of early Christianity in a period before the establishment of a common creed, canon, or male hierarchical leadership.

  • Factions, Variety, Diversity, Multiplicity

    Karen L King•ARTICLE•Method & Theory in the Study of…•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Early Christians largely understood their differences in terms of factionalism, articulated in terms of discourses of orthodoxy and heresy. Contemporary historiography has troubled those discourses with talk of the “diversity” or “variety” of early Christianities, but without entirely displacing either the logic or the functions of the orthodoxy-heresy bifurcation. This essay examines the limits of current historiographical modes of treating earl…

  • Living It Out

    Karen L King•ARTICLE•Journal of Feminist Studies in…•2006

Response Karen L. King (bio) I have known Emily Culpepper since the 1980s, when we were part of a feminist group organized by Karen Jo Torjesen called Gender and Methodology. It was the first collaborative group grant funded by the American Academy of Religion (1989–1991), and we continued to meet regularly in Southern California for about seven years. I learned so much from Emily during those years that it defies any concise articulation here. S…
