This article grapples with the problem of applying a nineteenth-century neologism to the relationships between clergy and laity within pre-Reformation Catholicism, essentially between circa 1100 and circa 1530. This paper reports the identification of some fragments of an inscription now preserved in a window at All Saints, North Street, York, as the remnants of a statement of indulgences to reward prayers before a painted image in a window. As far as is known, this is the only surviving glass to demonstrate the proclamation of indulgences in medieval English church windows, although antiquarian evidence of at least one other is recorded
