  • Nineteenth-century Japanese and British science in context

Open Access•Bernard Lightman, Efram Sera–shriar et al.•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2025

This special issue focuses on the complex cultural connections between Japanese and British science in the nineteenth century. This was a period when intellectuals around the globe began to interact more intensively due to increased opportunities to travel and the growth in translations of important scientific works into many languages. This was also an era when, in the latter part of the century, Japanese intellectuals were searching for ways to…

  • The impact of British chemistry and physics upon Japanese science in the late nineteenth century

    Open Access•Yoshiyuki Kikuchi•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2025

The Meiji period between 1868 and 1912, when the introduction of Western science into Japan started in earnest, was also the time when specialization became an increasingly pressing and complex issue in natural science, especially in Victorian Britain where specialization went hand in hand with ‘interconnectedness’ between various fields of study. This article examines the impact of this complicated situation surrounding ‘specialization’ in ninet…

  • Changes in Employment Structure and Net Migration between 2005 and 2020 in Japan's Peripheral Areas

    Open Access•Yoshiyuki Kikuchi•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography (Chigaku…•2024

  • The financialization of real estate in Japan

Yoshiyuki Kikuchi, Kenji Teshima et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 11

The term ‘financialization of real estate’ (FoRE) refers to the method of connecting financial markets with the geographical location of real estate assets. Therefore, the unevenness of regional development is closely tied to FoRE. In Japan, FoRE’s initial focus was Tokyo; however, the interest has recently spread to the periphery. This shift occurred owing to changes in investment actors and their strategies, which also changed the impact of the…

  • Cross-National Odyssey of a Chemist

    Open Access•Yoshiyuki Kikuchi•ARTICLE•History of Science•2012•References: 7

How can historians make sense of career of a scientist like Edward Divers (1837-1912)? He attended Royal College of Chemistry (RCC) in London, England, worked as a chemistry assistant and medical student at Queen's College Galway (QCG), Ireland, and taught chemistry in Tokyo at a couple of Japanese colleges for more than two decades. The easiest way would be to focus on one site of science most known to them, in this case unquestionably London an…

  • Hybridity and the Oriental Orientalism of Mingei Theory

    Yoshiyuki Kikuchi•ARTICLE•Journal of Design History•1997

Orientalism is not a rigid one-way phenomenon projected on to the Orient from the Occident. It is an infectious phenomenon, open to appropriation by ‘others’, at least in the case of modern Japan. This article presents a case study of Mingei (folk crafts) theory created by Yanagi Sôetsu and evaluated in the Occident as an ‘Oriental’ theory for what is deemed to be its greatest merit—‘traditional authenticity’. The intention of this article is fir…
