What Were World’s Fairs for? Catalysts for Trade-Based Urban Development in the Second Industrial Revolution
This essay proposes a new approach to world’s fairs. Local elites, representing manufacturing, banking, transportation, merchandizing, and commercial interests, organized pre–World War I expositions to create urban settings supporting trade and cultivating innovation on a long-term basis. These stimuli came in the form of systematized infrastructure and environmental improvements, resources for training technical workforce, educating public taste…

L'age du plip
In this collection of fifteen essays, Bruno Jacomy offers a series of engaging, erudite, and thought-provoking meditations on a wide variety of topics related to the history of material objects and the challenges of displaying technology. Most of these essays were originally published as articles, but they have been extended and revised to create this ensemble. As associate director of the marvelously refurbished and reorganized Musée Nationale d…

La democratie et les medias au 20e siecle (review)
It is too bad that Democracy and the Media is in French, because this very useful book will be inaccessible to those who most need it: historians of technology whose lack of language skills is matched by a provincial focus on national exceptionalism. The book's value rests in Catherine Bertho Lavenir's synthesis of the history of the media and political power in five Western nations over the course of the twentieth century. Her starting point is …
What the French Have to Say about the History of Technology
Paris: structuralism, poststructuralism, the work of Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and Jean Baudrillard.' In my work, I have been led to do some of the same kind of questioning, with the twist that, rather than exploring why Englishspeaking historians of technology anxiously try to keep up with the French, I have to ask why-relatively speaking-non-French practitioners of our discipline seem to pay so little attention to France and French hist…

This article is a revised version of a paper presented at the 1991 meeting of the Society for French Historical Studies in Vancouver, B.C., and at the Society for the History of Technology meeting in Sacramento, Calif., in 1989. It is part of a larger study on the relationship between design, society, and technological change in industrializing France on which I am currently working. I want to thank Michael Smith, Robert Frost, David Pinkney, and…

The Science of Art is a valuable compendium of optical theory and practice as it relates to Western art. Kemp’s survey of the literature on the subject seems to be complete. My only reservations have to do with some of the assumptions that lie behind Kemp’s approach. In confining himself to the “optical themes in western a…

TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE Book Reviews 175 This collection of thirty-one previously published articles and an interview with the French anthropologist Georges Haudricourt is akin to a Pointillist painting. Each small piece has its own intrinsic value, but if one steps back mentally into the middle distance, the pieces coalesce into larger patterns of meaning. The book merits attention from historians of technology precisely because Haudricourt was a…
