Jorge Lobo Miglioli (1935-2025): Marx, Kalecki e o sonho desenvolvimentista no Brasil
Intervention in suicidal ideation and suicide prevention: Experiences and perceptions of a group of Portuguese psychologists
Objective: Suicide represents 800.000 annual deaths, worldwide, and three daily deaths in Portugal. Suicide prevention in a clinical context involves intervening in risk factors such as suicidal ideation. However, this prevention is lacking, given that, globally, 40% of individuals who died by suicide visited emergency services in the previous year. Healthcare professionals face anxiety and difficulties managing at-risk cases, which hinders the e…
When economic theory meets policy: Barbara Wootton and the creation of the British welfare state
This article investigates Barbara Wootton’s contributions to the discussion and implementation of a welfare system in Britain. It draws both from her theoretical work and her engagement in the public debate, including her interactions with William Beveridge and his welfare plan for post-war Britain. An assessment of Wootton’s published and unpublished works allows for correlating her views on economic theory and policy with the role of the state.…
Retrospectives: Joan Robinson on Karl Marx: “His Sense of Reality Is Far Stronger”
This paper revisits why Joan Robinson turned to Karl Marx in 1942 and which insights from Marxian economics she sought to incorporate into her later works, while commenting on how her encounter with Marx was received by some her of contemporaries. By the end of the 1930s, Robinson wanted to bring academic and Marxian economics together in a search for a more realist theory of the rate of profit and income distribution, along with clarifications o…
Fictitious capital, the credit system, and the particular case of government bonds in Marx
This paper is a theoretical contribution to the development and update of Marx’s theory of money and credit, given the empirical developments in finance since the 1970s. It expands on the discussion of fictitious capital and government bonds within the Marxian literature. In contrast with most Marxian literature and some of Marx’s own writings on the topic, I argue that fictitious capital does not represent any real capital and then further devel…
International financial subordination: A critical research agenda
Despite a varied picture in terms of their relative economic strength, Developing and Emerging Economies (DEEs) remain in a subordinate position in the global monetary and financial system. While the IPE and economics literatures provide rich insights about the significance of this phenomenon, research efforts remain fragmented. To address this problem, we offer an umbrella concept—international financial subordination (IFS)—to channel research e…

Changing the Narrative: Economics After Covid-19
In this article, we argue that societies’ unpreparedness and inadequate responses to the Covid-19 pandemic expose weaknesses in the foundations of the dominant economic paradigm. We document how economics came to disembed itself from broader societal analysis and how this has influenced public policy in problematic ways, leading to privileging of efficiency over resilience. We then go a step further to consider the role of economic evidence in pu…
