Globally, soil policy and management have been based on a limited understanding of values and perspectives, and mainly dominated by a Western-centric soil science perspective. Further, this understanding has tended to be highly focused on instrumental values—particularly the soil’s productive potential and use. • Oxygen isotope ratios in Holocene carbonates across a climatic gradient, eastern Washington State, USA

    Open Access•Bryan Stevenson, B A Stevenson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•References: 2

Oxygen isotope ratios of pedogenic carbonates were analyzed along a climatic gradient in the Palouse region of eastern Washington State to evaluate changes in their isotopic composition with changing climate. A modern analog approach was used to assess the relationship between the istotope ratios in the pedogenic carbonates with those in soil water (measured in June when we anticipated carbonate formation might occur because of low soil water con…

In the United States, 13-and 14-year-old children, prosecuted as adults, have been and continue to be sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole. While the United States Supreme Court recently declared in Roper v Simmons that death by execution is unconstitutional for juveniles, young children continue to be sentenced to imprisonment until they die with minimal scrutiny or review. A study by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) ha…

  • Bargaining in the Shadow of the Law

Bryan Stevenson, Justin Wolfers•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2006

This paper exploits the variation occurring from the different timing of divorce law reforms across the United States to evaluate how unilateral divorce changed family violence and whether the option provided by unilateral divorce reduced suicide and spousal homicide. Unilateral divorce both potentially increases the likelihood that a domestic violence relationship ends and acts to transfer bargaining power toward the abused, thereby potentially …
