Caporalato capitalism. Labour brokerage and agrarian change in a Mediterranean society
This article discusses the persistence of illegal labour mediation in Italian industrialized agricultural production despite a decade of legal and policy reforms. Focusing on the regions of Puglia and Basilicata during the so-called Mediterranean 'refugee crisis' (2011-2018), it analyses such mediation as a central infrastructure of contemporary capitalist agri-food supply chains, which both capitalizes on the value of labour reproduction, and co…
Subcontracted Migrant Labour and Just-in-time Retail Chain Requirements: A Qualitative Research on the Bagged Salad Commodity System in Northern Italy
This article focuses on the commodity system of the ready-to-eat bagged salad in Italy, and in particular on the transformations in labour organization and labour relationships in processing plants in the Lombardy Region. Here, the most part of employees are migrant workers, especially of Indian origin. Our analysis concerns three main points. First, a relevant part of the labour operations in processing plants are outsourced to smaller manufactu…

Goodness-of-Fit Testing for the Newcomb-Benford Law With Application to the Detection of Customs Fraud
The Newcomb-Benford law for digit sequences has recently attracted interest in antifraud analysis. However, most of its applications rely either on diagnostic checks of the data, or on informal decision rules. We suggest a new way of testing the Newcomb-Benford law that turns out to be particularly attractive for the detection of frauds in customs data collected from international trade. Our approach has two major advantages. The first one is tha…
Agricultural Day Laborers in Southern Italy: Forms of Mobility and Resistance
This article analyzes migrant agricultural labor in southern Italy, focusing on migrants from Burkina Faso and Romania laboring in the regions of Puglia and Basilicata. The argument underlines the connections between mobility, willingness to work for low wages, and conflict in the workplace. The essay investigates, firstly, why migrants are willing to work for lower wages than established in collective agreements. Migrants' deportability explains…
