Blacks and Britannity
In this article three contexts are explored in which the discourse of fraternity obscures the specific position of women for anti‐racists: in the 1960s around the development of anti‐racist education; the 1970s and 1980s ‘new wave’ of women's and anti‐racist movements, and most recently in terms of attitudes towards Muslim women, particularly the ‘headscarf affair’ and the reception of women fleeing fundamentalist violence in Algeria. Before look…
Struggling for Rights
This article considers the political impact of recent migration of women from West Africa to France in the context of draconian controls (the Pasqua Laws). It outlines the main characteristics of both the migration and the legislation, and analyses the principal features of the eighteen month dispute for the legalization of undocumented workers which has become known as the "lutte des sanspapiers

Racist Violence and Antiracist Reactions
‘Racist violence’ in France is closely linked to socio-economic factors and to patterns of institutionalised racial violence which developed in different ways through the collaborationist Vichy regime of the Second World War and the Algerian war. Today, these institutional patterns of racism affect the legal system and the police, but also influence behaviour in civil society. However, there is growing understanding of the existence of a ‘climate…

Concepts, models and anti-racist strategies in Britain and France1
European integration brings with it the aspiration that anti‐racist strategies will be co‐ordinated throughout the twelve member states. However, definitions of the problems to be addressed vary widely. This article compares the position in France and Britain, pointing out that for many French people the pursuit of equality is much more important than the recognition of minorities. This difference is rooted in historical experience. The article a…

Street Collections and the Coal Dispute
Reports of police harassment of collections came from throughout Britain, although in the first few months of the strike relatively few problems with the police were reported. One of the first incidents took place in St. Austell, Cornwall, but London was the area where police attention to the collections was more apparent. An estimated 250 people were summonsed for illegal street collection in the Metropolitan Police District as a result of the d…
