  • Kilka uwag o przyszłości Europy w świetle prognoz demograficznych

    Open Access•Marek Okolski•ARTICLE•Roczniki Kulturoznawcze•2020

  • A Continent Moving West?: EU Enlargement and Labour Migration from Central and Eastern Europe

Open Access•Richard Black, Godfried Engbersen et al.•BOOK•Continent Moving West?•2012

A Continent Moving West? argues that the conceptualization of migration as a one-way or long-term process is becoming increasingly wide of the mark. Rather, east-west labor migration in Europe, in common perhaps with other flows in and from other parts of the world, is diverse, fluid, and influenced by the dynamics of local and sector-specific labor markets and migration-related political regulations. The papers in this book contribute to critica…

  • European Immigrations: Trends, Structures and Policy Implications

    Open Access•Marek Okolski, Marek Ok•BOOK•European Immigrations Trends…•2012

This book makes an essential contribution to understanding the dynamics of contemporary immigrant inflows and integration in Europe. Though embracing a Continent-wide outlook on migration processes, it accounts, in particular, for Southern and Eastern European perspectives. This is accomplished by analysing the long-term transition countries undergo from net emigration to net immigration, as well as developments in their migrant inflows, integrat…

  • Demographic Processes Before and During the Ongoing Transition in Poland

    Marek Okolski•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sociology•2004

Since 1989, most of Poland's main demographic trends have changed. These changes took place almost instantly with the introduction of basic political and economic reforms. The demographic reactions were of three types: reversal of a trend direction, substantial acceleration or deceleration of a trend, and discontinuity of a trend. In this article, three basic hypotheses are considered. The first suggests that demographic trends returned to a smoo…

  • La politique migratoire de la Pologne à la veille de son adhésion à l'Union européenne

    Marek Okolski, Anne De Tinguy•ARTICLE•Hommes & migrations•2001

  • Illegality of International Population Movements in Poland

    Open Access•Marek Okolski•ARTICLE•International Migration•2000•Cited by: 7•References: 2

Until the beginning of the 1990s Poland did not receive foreign migrants. Thereafter, the situation changed dramatically. A large part of the inflow proved to be illegal migrants, many of whom were in transit to Western Europe. Although these movements gradually declined in the second half of the decade, some became increasingly identified with relatively sophisticated smuggling of people. Foreigners smuggled from the South to the West, together …

  • Recent Trends and Major Issues in International Migration: Central and East European Perspectives

    Open Access•Marek Okolski•ARTICLE•International Social Science…•2000•Cited by: 1

Until the late 1980s Central and Eastern Europe was a region relatively isolated from the other parts of the world. Flows of people between the countries, even inside the region, were rather small and sporadic, due to administrative restrictions on foreign travel. Contrary to what was feared in the West around 1990, it has not been flooded by East Europeans newly equipped with the freedom of movement. Indeed, the out‐flow of groups such as ethnic…

  • Abortion and Contraception in Poland

    Marek Okolski•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1983•Cited by: 4

The abortion law in Poland is among the most liberal in the world. Poland is also a predominantly Roman Catholic country with a relatively high percentage of well-educated people. In these circumstances a peculiar countraceptive pattern has developed: most couples irrespective of their education and other socioeconomic characteristics rely on inefficient methods of contraception and the incidence of induced abortion is very high. In the 1977 nati…
