    This philosophical paper suggests that almost all academic research, including qualitative research, is conducted under the influence of a "technicity paradigm" which values objectivity, generalisability and rationality.     The aim of this paper is to reconceptualise interpretation as one of the major functions of a tour guide. The paper is based on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger (1996).
