  • The Social Burden of Resilience

    Open Access•Adam Izdebski, L Mordechai et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2018

We examine the social burden associated with resilience to environmental shocks in pre-modern societies. We argue that analyses of state-level interventions to mitigate the consequences of catastrophic events tend to isolate these measures from their larger social contexts and thereby overlook the uneven distribution of their burden across different groups. We use three cases of pre-modern societies in the northeastern Mediterranean - the sixth c…

  • Unpuzzling American Climate

    White, Sam White•ARTICLE•Isis•2015•Citada por: 8•Referências: 22

In the early exploration and colonization of the Americas, Europeans encountered unfamiliar climates that challenged received ideas from classical geography. This experience drove innovative efforts to understand and explain patterns of weather and seasons in the New World. A close examination of three climatic puzzles (the habitability of the tropics, debates on the likelihood of a Northwest Passage, and the unexpectedly harsh weather in the fir…

  • Shewing the difference betweene their conjuration, and our invocation on the name of God for rayne

White, Sam White•ARTICLE•The William and Mary Quarterly•2015•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

European explorers and colonists and the Native Americans they encountered faced challenges from severe winters and droughts characteristic of the Little Ice Age in North America during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. This article examines the impact of Little Ice Age climate and weather during the first century of European-Indian encounters in North America through a peculiar pattern of events found in many early colonial narrativ…

  • Forum

Mark Carey, Philip Garone et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental History•2014•Citada por: 8•Referências: 21

This Forum explores global climate change, one of this century's most prominent environmental issues. Authors answer two critical questions: (1) How does the study of climate history enrich the field of environmental history more broadly? (2) How can environmental historians contribute to present-day understandings of and responses to global climate change? This introductory essay (and the Forum more generally) contribute to both environmental hi…

  • The Real Little Ice Age

    White, Sam White•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2013•Citada por: 4•Referências: 30

The Little Ice Age is not a dogma. It is an increasingly firm consensus backed by considerable evidence across a variety of sources. To disprove it, or even to call it into question, would mean finding systematic errors in several types of proxy data. Kelly and Ó Gráda have not cleared any of these hurdles, or even come close. The refutation of their arguments demonstrates just how strong the evidence for the Little Ice Age has become and just ho…

  • The Little Ice Age Crisis of the Ottoman Empire

    Sam White•CHAPTER•Water on Sand•2012

After centuries of conquest and expansion, the Ottoman Empire descended into crisis in the 1590s as a widespread uprising known as the Celali Rebellion ushered in decades of economic dislocation, military setbacks, and flight and chaos in the countryside. This chapter offers a fundamental reinterpretation of this social unrest, combining original archival research with new data and perspectives from climatology to present the crisis as a critical…

  • The Climate of Rebellion in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire

Open Access•White, Sam White•BOOK•Climate of Rebellion in the Early…•2011

The Climate of Rebellion in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire explores the serious and far-reaching impacts of Little Ice Age climate fluctuations in Ottoman lands. This study demonstrates how imperial systems of provisioning and settlement that defined Ottoman power in the 1500s came unraveled in the face of ecological pressures and extreme cold and drought, leading to the outbreak of the destructive Celali Rebellion (1595–1610). This rebellion ma…

  • From Globalized Pig Breeds to Capitalist Pigs

    White, Sam White•ARTICLE•Environmental History•2011•Citada por: 17•Referências: 8

This article examines the history of how Chinese pig breeds came to Europe and later America. While Asian hogs were domesticated for feeding on waste and agricultural by-products, ancient European hogs had to range in forests for mast, producing a leaner, more wild type. As European forests were cleared, mast feeding came under recurring pressure, creating incentives for improved swine management and breeding. In the eighteenth century, as Northe…

    Open Access•White, Sam White•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•2010•Citada por: 13•Referências: 24

Drawing on a range of recent studies and original sources, this article calls for a revision of the usual paradigm of disease in Ottoman history by applying a more interdisciplinary approach and new insights from environmental history. The historiography of disease in the Middle East developed from the late 1970s to the early 1990s envisioned a steady mortality from inevitable cycles of bubonic plague supposedly accepted with pious resignation by…
