Implementation of harm reduction strategies in criminal-legal systems: A scoping review of the literature
BACKGROUND: Harm reduction is a public health approach that emphasizes strategies to reduce the negative consequences of drug use. Rising overdose deaths in the United States have prompted integration of harm reduction strategies within criminal-legal systems (CLS), which have historically emphasized deterrence. However, the scope and nature of these strategies across the CLS remain poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review, in ac…
Pubertal Development and Pregnancy Outcomes Among System-Involved Youth
System-involved youth are a vulnerable population at high-risk of experiencing numerous sexual reproductive health (SRH) outcomes. They are likely to have several risk factors for teen pregnancy and parenting including abuse and neglect histories, lack of a supportive consistent adult in their lives, and limited opportunities to experience normal romantic relationships. Issues of pubertal development are rarely addressed in this population. Data …
“If It Didn’t Get Reported, It Didn’t Happen”: Current Nonfatal Overdose Reporting Practices among Nontraditional Reporters in Texas
Background: Drug overdose deaths in Texas have been accelerating in recent years with an increase of 33% in the 12 months leading up to December 2020. Accurate counts of nonfatal overdoses – including associated aspects of overdose, such as substances involved, demographic information, and reversal agents administered is critical to increase timely and adequate response to individuals and communities in need. Methods: Twenty semi-structured inter…

A Latent Class Analysis of Prevention Approaches Used to Reduce Community-Level Prescription Drug Misuse in Adolescents and Young Adults
Healthy aging? An evaluation of sport participation as a resource for older adults in retirement
Growing disparities between quality and quantity of life may be one of the most significant health challenges of our time. Retirement is a significant transitional event that can impact quality of life outcomes. Drawing on the Resource-Based Dynamic Perspective Theory, successful adaptation from the retirement transition is dependent upon resources known to predict retirement well-being. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship …
Peer and Individual Risk Factors in Adolescence Explaining the Relationship Between Girls’ Pubertal Timing and Teenage Childbearing
Peer Group Similarity in Perceptions of Pubertal Timing
Trajectories of School Connectedness Across the Middle School Years: Examining the Roles of Adolescents’ Internalizing and Externalizing Problems
Students become increasingly disconnected from their schools across the middle school years, but little is known about the factors contributing to changes in school connectedness. This study examined the time-invariant and time-varying roles of depressive symptoms and externalizing problems in trajectories of student-perceived school connectedness across the middle school years. Three yearly waves of data were collected from 296 students beginnin…
Aggressive and Prosocial? Examining Latent Profiles of Behavior, Social Status, Machiavellianism, and Empathy
The differential associations of internalizing symptoms and family and school relationships with disordered eating attitudes among early adolescents
Driven by the social development model, this study examines the associations of family functioning, school climate, and internalizing symptoms with disordered eating attitudes in early adolescence. Results from a representative sample of 848 sixth- and seventh-grade students indicate that disordered eating attitudes are positively correlated with family conflict and maternal psychological control and perceived friction and competition among class…
Longitudinal Bi-directional Relationships Between Sleep and Youth Substance Use
The Stability of Perceived Pubertal Timing Across Adolescence
Youth Substance Use and Body Composition: Does Risk in One Area Predict Risk in the Other
Depressive Symptoms among US Military Spouses during Deployment: The Protective Effect of Positive Emotions
Using the Broaden-and-Build Theory of Positive Emotions, the relationships among stress, positivity, and depressive symptoms were examined in a sample of military spouses during deployment ( N = 367). Over one-third of the spouses reported moderately severe levels of depressive symptoms. After controlling for demographic and deployment variables, stress had a positive association with depressive symptoms (β = .59, p < .001), while positivity had …
Demographic differences in self-report pubertal status among rural adolescents in the US
Demographic patterns were both consistent with and different from previous research with urban adolescents, suggesting the need for comparison of demographic patterns of pubertal development in samples that include youth from urban and rural areas
