  • An Agent-Based Model of Social Identity Dynamics

Open Access•P E Smaldino, Paul Smaldino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2012•Cited by: 3

According to optimal distinctiveness theory (ODT; Brewer 1991), individuals prefer social groups that are relatively distinct compared to other groups in the individuals' social environment. Distinctive groups (i.e., groups of moderate relative size) are deemed "optimal" because they allow for feelings of inclusion and social connection while simultaneously providing a basis for differentiating the self from others. However, ODT is a theory about…

  • The Interaction of Body Morphology, Directional Kinematics, and Environmental Structure in the Generation of Neonatal Rat ( Rattus norvegicus ) Locomotor Behavior

    Christopher J May, Jeffrey C Schank•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2009

We show that modeling directional kinematics is especially important for understanding spatial patterns of behavior in an arena. In rats, although patterns of locomotion appear to be under sensory control, they may be largely if not entirely explained, during early locomotor development, by the directional kinematics of random movement together with morphological/environmental constraints. Different relative probabilities of forward movement vers…

  • Problems with dimensionless measurement models of synchrony in biological systems

    Open Access•Jeffrey C Schank•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1997

Synchrony is surprisingly complex even in the simplest cases. One strategy for simplifying complex phenomena is to define a dimensionless measurement model with the aim of (1) finding order, (2) comparing complex phenomena, and (3) making decisions about statistical significance. However, a model is only as good as its assumptions. In this paper, several types of dimensionless measurement models of synchrony among biological states are evaluated …
