Impact of Trauma and Obstetric Conditions on Postpartum Mental Health in Veterans
Trauma-Informed Care in out-of-School time Programs
Children with multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been shown to be at greater risk of experiencing negative health and social outcomes as adults. Providing Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) to children with ACEs has been linked to better health outcomes later in life. Similarly, Out-of-School Time (OST) programs may also play an important role in supporting children who have experienced ACEs. However, few studies have examined the prevale…
Feeling the Fireline
This article examines the formation of environmental knowledge among California wildland firefighters in contexts of extreme climate change. Every year, as climate change intensifies fire conditions, wildland firefighters work along the edges of the largest blazes in California’s human history. The lives of people and forests often depend upon firefighters’ abilities to predict and manage the spread of flames, anticipating where, when, and with w…
Associations between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Sexual Risk among Postpartum Women
Epidemiological evidence suggests that exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is associated with sexual risk, especially during adolescence, and with maternal and child health outcomes for women of reproductive age. However, no work has examined how ACE exposure relates to sexual risk for women during the postpartum period. In a convenience sample of 460 postpartum women, we used linear and logistic regression to investigate association…
Features and Impact of Trust-Based Relationships Between Community Health Workers and Low-Resource Perinatal Women with Chronic Health Conditions
Professional teaching standards and inclusion in teacher education
Initial Teacher Education (ITE) is a critical arena for advancing inclusion in Health and Physical Education (HPE). This paper reports research that is engaging with the diversity of the HPE profession and practitioners. It centres on a unique case study that critically explored the school-based professional experience of an Australian secondary HPE Pre-service Teacher (PsT) who has a hearing impairment. Specifically, to enable PST success in HPE…

Transforming prenatal care
Every 8 seconds a baby is born in the United States. Maternal and newborn care are the nation's most expensive clinical services, and despite spending more per capita on health services, the United States experiences worse perinatal outcomes than most other developed countries, and even worse than many developing countries when it comes to maternal and infant mortality, preterm birth, and other comorbid conditions. We established a transdisciplin…
Bridging the Response to Mass Shootings and Urban Violence
We have described self-reported exposure to gun violence in an urban community of color to inform the movement toward a public health approach to gun violence prevention. The Community Alliance for Research and Engagement at Yale School of Public Health conducted community health needs assessments to document chronic disease prevalence and risk, including exposure to gun violence. We conducted surveys with residents in six low-income neighborhood…
