Diapers vs. Date Nights
The transition to parenthood is often a challenging and stressful time for couples, with partners’ experiences possibly varying by gender and timing of childbirth. We surveyed married couples (two-phase n = 124 couples; roughly 45% Hispanic) within 6 months post-wedding and 2.5 years later to assess changes in marital disillusionment and satisfaction as a function of parenting statuses (children from premarital pregnancy, children from postmarita…
Psychometric Evaluation of Single-Item Relationship Satisfaction, Love, Conflict, and Commitment Measures
Issues in applied survey research, including minimizing respondent burden and ensuring measures’ brevity for smartphone administration, have intensified efforts to create short measures. We conducted two studies on the psychometric properties of single-item satisfaction, love, conflict, and commitment measures. Study 1 was longitudinal, surveying college-age dating couples at three monthly waves ( n =121, 84, and 68 couples at the respective wave…
Machine learning uncovers the most robust self-report predictors of relationship quality across 43 longitudinal couples studies
Significance What predicts how happy people are with their romantic relationships? Relationship science—an interdisciplinary field spanning psychology, sociology, economics, family studies, and communication—has identified hundreds of variables that purportedly shape romantic relationship quality. The current project used machine learning to directly quantify and compare the predictive power of many such variables among 11,196 romantic couples. P…
Guilty Pleasure? Communicating Sexually Explicit Content on Dating Apps and Disillusionment with App Usage
Some people send or receive sexually explicit images or messages when using dating apps. Seeing unwanted content may produce adverse effects, consistent with expectancy violations theory (EVT), and disillusion some users. To test links between encountering sexually explicit materials and dating app disillusionment (with oneself, with others, and regret over app usage), we surveyed two samples of dating app users. Study 1 (n = 531 college students…
Accuracy and bias in newlywed spouses' perceptions of each other's personalities
This study investigated moderators of newlywed spouses' accuracy in judging each other's personality. Spouses in 154 predominantly Hispanic newlywed couples rated their own and their partners' personality traits. Full‐sample results showed significant associations between perceivers' and targets' personality ratings (“truth force”/“tracking accuracy”). Positive directional bias (perceivers' mean trait ratings of targets exceeding targets' self‐ra…
