    Open Access•Pierre Pichard•ARTICLE•Moussons•2017

In Southeast Asia, the orientation of ancient monuments commonly said to be “ open to the east” differs frequently from the true east, by being either northward or southward. Most of them could have been originally oriented toward the rising sun, and by measuring their angular deviation from true east it becomes possible to calculate two days, one of them being the approximate day of their foundation (however one cannot compute the specific year)…

Whereas in Indian temples, windows tend to be quite exceptional (enclosure galleries being made up of porticos facing the inner yard), in Cambodia they form a striking feature of Angkorian architecture. Enclosure galleries are more diversified and generally present many windows on one side and blind windows on the other. One of the walls can be replaced by a portico sustained by pillars facing the inner part of the temple, or even sometimes facin…

    Open Access•Pierre Pichard•ARTICLE•Moussons•2001

  • Dechenphug

    Pierre Pichard•ARTICLE•Arts asiatiques•2000

Conservation works on Dechenphug, a small monastery in Bhutan, were carried out from 1996 to 1999 under the scientific control of Unesco. From the beginning, a strong disagreement was obvious between the ethics of the international organisation and the current local practice. A compromise was eventually agreed, a proof that both approaches are not always irreconcilable. Field training of local actors was a an important component of the project, w…

  • Sous les voûtes de Pagan

    Pierre Pichard•ARTICLE•Arts asiatiques•1993

Some 350 temples at Pagan still have mural paintings on their walls or under their vaults. This is the largest corpus of murals from 11th to 14th centuries AD in South-East Asia. On the walls, the large diversity in decorative and iconographie themes calls for a thorough study and monographs on selected temples. The decoration painted under the vaults is more systematic and can be outlined under two main topics : Emblematic motifs, usually circul…
