  • Commodifying Public Utilities: EU's New Governance Prescriptions for Rail and Water

Open Access•Darragh Golden, Imre Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Governance•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 44

In the mid‐2000s, the Single Market Program and European Monetary Union lost momentum, as public services advocates increasingly succeeded in tempering attempts to liberalize public utilities through legislative amendments and Court of Justice rulings. After the 2008 crisis, however, the EU's shift to a new economic governance (NEG) regime provided EU executives with a new tool to advance their objectives. Unlike EU directives, country‐specific N…

  • Politicising Commodification: European Governance and Labour Politics from the Financial Crisis to the Covid Emergency

Open Access•Roland Erne, Sabina Stan et al.•BOOK•Politicising Commodification•2024

Under what conditions can organized labour successfully politicize the European integration process across borders? To answer this question, we compare the European Citizens' Initiatives (ECIs) of two European trade union federations: EPSU's successful Right2Water ECI and ETF's unsuccessful Fair Transport ECI. Our comparison reveals that actor‐centred factors matter – namely, unions' ability to create broad coalitions. Successful transnational la…

  • Introduction: Politicizing the transnational

    Roland Erne, A Bieler et al.•ARTICLE•Labor History•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 27

Labor movements have always found it difficult to reveal and transform the social relations that constitute markets. The growing transnational movements of goods, capital, and services in themselves have therefore not triggered closer trade union cooperation across borders. Transnational collective action also requires conscious choices and a mutual understanding that solidarity across borders is warranted. For this reason, this special issue of …
