Gender politics in israel: The case of affirmative action for women directors
The relationship between gender and performance issues of concern to directors: Correlates or institution
This paper focuses on the influence of gender on performance issues which concern directors of publicly traded corporations in Israel. Two theoretical perspectives for the explanation of gender differences in occupations were examined. The first views gender as an individual-level property that is correlated with occupational and job variables and the behavioral differences between men and women as the result of these correlates. According to thi…

Money Matters: Spousal Incomes and Family/Work Relations Among Physician Couples in Israel
This study examined the significance of earnings ratios, for the division of family work and gender-role attitudes among 136 physician couples in Israel. Consistent with resource theory, ‘moderns’ (both earned the same) and ‘innovatives’ (wives earned more than the husbands) had a more egalitarian division of labor in the home and gender-role ideology than ‘conventionals’ (the husbands earned more than the wives). A discriminant analysis revealed…
They Have Eyes and See Not”: Gender Politics in the Diaspora Museum
An analysis of the display of gender in an Israeli museum of social history decodes the practices by which the museum constructs gender and uses gender difference in the display of Jewish life to construct male dominance and to marginalize women. It reinforces a stereotypical world in which women remain nameless and voiceless and have no contribution to show for themselves. Far from being a reflection of historical reality, women's marginalizatio…

The Political Context of Feminist Attitudes in Israel
The purpose of the present study was to identify the sources of social support for feminist issues in Israel. Attitudes toward these issues as social problems and toward feminism as a social movement were examined through a questionnaire administered to 2,097 university students studying in the Tel Aviv area in 1985-1986. The study found that Israeli students who considered gender discrimination in promotion and prohibitions against abortion seve…

The Attitudinal Effects of Gender Mix in Union Committees
This study examines the impact of the gender mix of union committees in Israel on the attitudes and perceptions of committee members. The author finds that both male and female members of committees with a male majority were more likely than members of committees with a female majority to believe that men have greater leadership skills than women and that women are elected primarily to represent women rather than all workers. Also, in neither typ…

Differences in stage of occupational field and subfield choice among students of three engineering subfields
First‐year students in three engineering subfields were compared in terms of reported stage of both field (engineering) and subfield choice as well as on several biographical variables. There were some differences, albeit insignificant, in stage at which the field was chosen. However, significant differences were found in stage of subfield choice: electrical engineering students (EE) chose the subfield earlier than did either mechanical (ME) or i…
Sex Structure of Occupations: The Israeli Experience
A comparison of the patterns of change in female labor force participation reveals considerable similarities between Israel and the U. S. In both countries women tend to be concentrated in a small number of "female" occupations, characterized by their close association with tasks traditionally performed by women. The role played by the army and government as agents of change in Israel was considered and both were found to reinforce existing segre…
