Geomorphology and Prehistoric Site Distribution Near Hamilton City, California, and Their Implications for the Archaeological Record of the Sacramento Valley
Despite more than a century of investigations, archaeologists have found few prehistoric sites over 3,000 years old in California's Central Valley. Yet, recent surface inventory, geoarchaeological trenching, and archaeological excavations along the Sacramento River near Hamilton City, California, identified 10 archaeological sites and 15 occupational components spanning the last 7,000 years. Half of these components occurred solely in buried cont…
A New Radiocarbon Database for the Lower 48 States
From 2014 to 2020, we compiled radiocarbon ages from the lower 48 states, creating a database of more than 100,000 archaeological, geological, and paleontological ages that will be freely available to researchers through the Canadian Archaeological Radiocarbon Database. Here, we discuss the process used to compile ages, general characteristics of the database, and lessons learned from this exercise in 'big data' compilation
Further Thoughts on the Age of the Sylwester Clovis Point: A Response to Haynes
We are indebted to C. Vance Haynes Jr for his careful reading of our 2017 report and for proposing alternative explanations for our field observations. In response, we consider each of the alternatives, present additional data, and find that our main conclusion – namely that some Clovis points in California may be of early Holocene age – does not require emendation in light of current knowledge
A Terminal Pleistocene/Early Holocene Environmental Record and Fluted Point from Twain Harte, California
Although more than 500 Clovis points have been found at no fewer than 60 locations in California, the age of these points remains problematic. Here we report stratified deposits more than 3 meters deep at a site in the central Sierra Nevada from which a Clovis point was recovered in 1969. Five radiocarbon (14C) dates provide temporal control for terminal Pleistocene and early Holocene strata at the site, including the sediments in which the point…
Improving Men’s Health: Developing a Long-Term Strategy
The subject of men’s health is frequently neglected in public health discussions. Yet neglecting men’s health generates considerable pain and suffering, along with sizeable and avoidable health care costs. The United States today is paying for men’s health, but as with the health care system generally, the payments are heavily tilted toward costly, high-tech interventions to address serious and neglected health conditions that, in many cases, cou…
A Federal Tax Credit to Encourage Employers to Offer Health Coverage
Many firms that employ low-wage workers cannot afford to offer an employee health plan, and many of the uninsured work for such firms. This article makes the case for an employer tax credit, administered by the Internal Revenue Service, as a way to extend health coverage to uninsured workers and their families. The permanent, fixed-dollar, refundable credit would be available to all low-wage employers (those with average wages of $10 per hour and…
Demographic Change and the American Future
Demographic Change and the American Future
The essays in this volume analyze the growing stresses of demographic trends in the United States and their implications for policymakers. They describe projections for U.S. birth rates, changing family patterns, age-dependency ratio, immigration, geographical distribution, income distribution, and international standing. This book was published under the auspices of the Committee for Economic Development in Washington, DC

Wage-Price Standards and Economic Policy
This study assesses the wage-price policy pursued by the US Council on Wage and Price Stability during its six-year existence, from 1974 to 1980
The Impact of Welfare Benefit Levels and Tax Rates on the Labor Supply of Poor Women
The principal problem with previous estimates of the effect of welfare programs on labor supply' is that the specification of the labor supply equation misrepresents the intercept and slope of the budget line for low-income individuals. Labor supply has typically been posited to be a function of the market wage rate unadjusted for the welfare tax rate and other income2 including actual welfare benefits
