The News Media, the Conservative Echo Chamber, and the Battle over Acorn
This paper examines the evolution of a major national political controversy, how the media handled it, and how the authors participated in it. The controversy involved the community organizing group ACORN, which conservatives generally, and the Republican Party in particular, sought to demonize and weaken, before, during, and after the 2008 Presidential election, in order to undermine ACORN's voter registration efforts, help elect GOP candidates,…
How Acorn Was Framed
Using the news controversy over the community group ACORN, we illustrate the way that the media help set the agenda for public debate and frame the way that debate is shaped. Opinion entrepreneurs (primarily business and conservative groups and individuals, often working through web sites) set the story in motion as early as 2006, the conservative echo chamber orchestrated an anti-ACORN campaign in 2008, the Republican presidential campaign repea…

Changing economic conditions in the second half of the 20th century led to a transformation in the discursive frame of reports about labour in US and Canadian newspapers. The article first historically documents the shift in the target market of US and Canadian newspapers from a mass audience of the working and middle class to a niche, “upscale” audience of the upper middle class. Secondly, the article critically analyses news reports of transit …
The 1997 United Parcel Service Strike
The United Parcel Service (UPS) strike of August 1997 is now commonly cited as labor’s greatest success of the 1990s, when 185,000 Teamster workers brought the nation’s largest parcel delivery service to a standstill and won most of their demands. Despite the fact that millions of consumers in the United States were touched by inconveniences, the majority of citizens supported the striking workers. Also surprising, many mainstream news media drop…
Framed
Christopher R. Martin argues that the mainstream news media (and the large corporations behind them) put the labor movement in a bad light even while avoiding the appearance of bias. Martin has found that the news media construct "common ground" narratives between labor and management positions by reporting on labor relations from a consumer perspective.Martin identifies five central storytelling frames using this consumer orientation that repeat…
