Material and social deprivation among one-person households
We explore whether gender has a statistically significant impact on material and social deprivation of single adults after accounting for other characteristics. We use data from the 2022 European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions survey for six European countries. By assuming deprivation as an individual latent trait and by treating different deprivation levels as ranked categories, we estimate a proportional odds model separately …
Relative-importance Analysis of Material and Social Deprivation Across European Countries
We investigate the relative importance of the socioeconomic characteristics of households associated with the risk of material and social deprivation. The methodology is based on sequential R $$^2$$ decomposition and cluster analysis approaches, applied to 27 European countries in 2023. Household data come from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions survey. Our analysis of relative importance reveals that household disposab…
Building (back) better cities for aged people in Europe
Covid-19 outbreak has mostly affected people in the second half of their lives, at risk of isolation and loneliness; in fact, the impact of the pandemic was even more severe for the well-being of the elderly. Such a recent event has to be framed within the challenge of the demographic increase of people aged 65 years or older, which is particularly relevant in the European context. This paper explores which gaps have to be filled up in order to m…
Comparing Material and Social Deprivation Indicators
The new indicator for material and social deprivation validated in 2014 by the European Commission enlarged the scope of measuring social exclusion, which entails both material hardship of individuals and households, and a relevant social dimension. Using EU-SILC data, this paper compares the standard measure of material deprivation and the new indicator in terms of the sub-population they identify as suffering deprivation across Europe. In 2019,…

Social exclusion and financial distress
This paper analyzes the phenomenon of severe material deprivation (SMD) in relation to socio-economic characteristics of Italian and Spanish households. Italy and Spain have registered very different shares of severe material deprivation (households that cannot afford a minimum acceptable way of life, which is a social exclusion problem) since the 2008–2009 economic crisis, despite having similar experiences of poverty as measured in monetary ter…
Features of personal income inequality before and during the crisis
This paper gives extensive evidence about disposable income inequality inside the regions of Italy and its associated population features. It explores whether the Great Recession changed income inequality within or between regions. Inequality appears largely to be a within-region problem, particularly in the South, and the crisis exacerbated this phenomenon. Middle-class women, migrants and large households in the middle/bottom classes, and botto…

Service Deregulation, Competition, and the Performance of French and Italian Firms
This article reports estimates of the impact of service regulation reform on the productivity of French and Italian firms in retail, transports and professional services over the period 1998–2007. We implement a two‐stage least squares estimation: the first‐stage instruments mark‐ups, a financial measure of rents, with barriers to entry and the second stage estimates the impact of instrumented mark‐ups on total factor productivity ( TFP ), a real…
Experience, Innovation, and Productivity
The authors investigate whether the level of employee experience is good or bad for innovation and productivity. Using a sample of Italian manufacturing firms during the early 2000s, the authors find different results for managers' versus workers' experience. The effect of managerial experience-proxied by age-on firm performance appears to depend on the type of firm; in innovative firms, having older managers and board members has a negative effe…
Fiscal Reforms during Fiscal Consolidation
We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the fiscal consolidation package adopted by Italy in 2011. Estimated at 3.3% of GDP, the tax measures were introduced to reduce public deficits without weakening the prospects of economic recovery or producing adverse redistributive outcomes. The tax reform mainly increases consumption and property taxes and gives relief for firms that recapitalize or hire young workers and women. To some extent, these m…
Infant cardiac activity
In this study the stability over the first 13 months of life of measures of infant cardiac activity (heart period and heart-period variability), their relations with each other, and their relations with a continuous-variable index of infant-mother attachment were investigated. The indexes of cardiac activity changed in an orderly way with development (increasing heart-rate variability, decreasing heart rate). There were moderate to high intercorr…
