Economies of scale and input substitution in public libraries
The Unemployment Rates of Men and Women: A Transition Probability Analysis
Women's unemployment rates were considerably higher than men's for many years, but during the 1980s this difference has virtually disappeared. This study is the first to examine that change through an analysis of trends in the probabilities of labor force transitions - movements between employment, unemployment, and nonparticipation in the labor force. Using BLS data, the authors find that about half of the narrowing of the unemployment rate diff…
Measuring Basic Wants for State and Local Public Goods: A Preference Independence Transformation Approach
Paul R. Blackley, Larry DeBoer, Measuring Basic Wants for State and Local Public Goods: A Preference Independence Transformation Approach, The Review of Economics and Statistics, Vol. 69, No. 3 (Aug., 1987), pp. 418-425
Resident Age and Housing Search: Evidence From Hedonic Residuals
Elderly people are likely to have higher housing market search costs than the population as a whole. Costly search increases the price paid by older persons for housing relative to its characteristics, and also increases the range of prices paid. To test this latter hypothesis, hedonic equations are estimated for six SMSAs using data from the Annual Housing Survey. The residuals of these hedonics represent variation in prices not explained by hou…
