Modeling cross-linguistic variation in phonological grain size via wordlikeness judgments
Speech production and recognition studies have revealed cross-linguistic variation in the grain size of phonological processing, particularly in the relative importance of individual segments and segment strings (analytical processing) and entire word forms (holistic processing). This variation has been ascribed to orthography (alphabets highlight individual phonemes) and/or syllabary size (the fewer the syllable types, the easier to process them…
Advancing primary care: Doctoral program for physician associates and nurse practitioners
The United States faces an impending crisis in primary care physician shortages, while Physician Associates (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are poised to help bridge the gap. This manuscript explores a groundbreaking solution: introducing a clinical doctorate program tailored to PAs and NPs, designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills to assume leadership roles in primary care. Unlike traditional medical education, this innovative ap…
Intuition, intonation, inconsistency, and innateness
Macaulay has performed a great service by pointing out unfounded leaps of logic in the syllable sections of descriptive grammars, but the auxiliary hypotheses that underlie such leaps require close scrutiny everywhere, including in his own argument: intuitions are more reliable than he claims, intonation is less reliable than he assumes, inconsistencies cannot be resolved by simply ignoring certain types of evidence, and innateness considerations…
Perception and production of a feature correlation in Chinese characters
How detailed is the implicit knowledge of regularities in written form? To address this question experimentally in Chinese, we examined a subtle feature correlation in which left stroke curving is obligatory in narrow arched-shaped components but not in wide ones, despite neither feature being lexically contrastive. While width did not directly affect curving classifications in a perception experiment, a statistically significant subset of partic…
Worldlikeness: A Web crowdsourcing platform for typological psycholinguistics
Worldlikeness, hosted online at https://worldlikeness.org , is a free Web crowdsourcing experimental tool and database that seeks to make it easier to generate and share cross-linguistic processing data. Adopting HTML5 technology and a responsive Web design using the JavaScript-based Meteor package, Worldlikeness supports the use of text and multimedia stimuli in a user interface optimized for participants using either desktops or mobile devices.…
Areal script form patterns with Chinese characteristics
It has often been claimed that writing systems have formal grammars structurally analogous to those of spoken and signed phonology. This paper demonstrates one consequence of this analogy for Chinese script and the writing systems that it has influenced: as with phonology, areal script patterns include the borrowing of formal regularities, not just of formal elements or interpretive functions. Whether particular formal Chinese script regularities…

Syntactic Judgment Experiments
Informal judgments of sentence acceptability have long been the primary source of evidence about grammaticality in syntax, and have been controversial just as long. In the past decade, there has been growing interest in collecting and analyzing acceptability judgments according to the formal protocols of experimental psycholinguistics, an approach sometimes called experimental syntax. This article reviews the major issues relevant to this approac…

On Her Majesty's Ideological State Apparatus: Indirect Rule and Empire
The British colonial policy of indirect rule was a crucial tool for the maintenance of empire. While indirect rule has typically been regarded as little more than an expedient solution to resource constraints, it can more accurately be understood as a type of ideological state apparatus, first described by Louis Althusser in his 1969 essay. Through an analysis of indirect rule in South Africa, support is provided for Althusser's theses on ideolog…

Politics Without Borders: Internationalist Political Thought
This article examines the place of internationalism in the theory and practice of social revolutionaries from the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 20th in order to shed light on the nature and meaning of national boundaries and their transcendence. Theories of ideology are brought to bear on the legacy of internationalist political thought, revealing the preconditions of its existence and viability. Finally, questions are posed as to …
Infants' sensitivity to word boundaries in fluent speech
Infants' sensitivity to word units in fluent speech was examined by inserting 1 sec pauses either at boundaries between successive words (Coincident versions) or between syllables within words (Noncoincident versions). In Experiment 1, 24 11-month-olds listened significantly longer to the Coincident versions. In Experiment 2, 24 four-and-a-half-and 24 nine-month-olds did not exhibit the preference for the Coincident versions that the 11-month-old…

Nonmainstream Body Modification: Genital Piercing, Branding, Burning, and Cutting
This article examines the phenomenon of nonmainstream body modification in contemporary United States, with an emphasis on genital piercing, branding, and cutting in several West Coast cities. Based on participant observation and interviews over a 2-year period, it discusses the pleasures and problems of fieldwork with nonmainstream body modifiers, describes the events at a series of San Francisco body modification workshops, and ends with an exp…
