Managing an Epidemic: Industrial Radium Poisoning and the Waterbury Clock Company
During World War I, self-luminescent watches, clocks, and instruments became available for the first time to the military and then to the public. Newly discovered glow-in-the-dark paint incorporated a very small amount of radium, which through radioactive decay supplied energy to the luminescent zinc sulfide that made up the bulk of the formula.
