Why French Parents Unintentionally Share False Childhood Vaccine Information Online: Examining the Interrelationship Between Social Media Judgments and Sociocultural Perceptions
School Counselors and Knowledge of Immigrant Policy: Variation by Location and Voter Preference
We investigate factors of immigrant policy implementation in schools, focusing on the role of school counselors in shaping access to higher education for undocumented students. Using a survey of 266 public high school counselors in New York and Pennsylvania, we assessed their knowledge of state laws affecting undocumented students' access to higher education. We find that there are significant differences among counselors based on their state of …
Factors of early Covid ‐19 prevention policy engagement in France and in the United States
This article highlights the factors that shape the public's early engagement with preventative health policies in the United States and in France. Our analysis explores the role that ideology and cultural worldviews play in shaping individuals' engagement with COVID‐19 early preventative measures such as mask wearing, stay‐at‐home orders, and vaccine intentions. We find that conservative ideology has an indirect effect on engagement in preventati…
Gender (In)equality in the Undocumented Youth Movement
This article assesses gender dynamics in local campaigns of the undocumented youth movement. Analyzing data from several years of fieldwork in New York and New Jersey and 132 interviews with undocumented activists, community organizers, and elected officials, we find that young women experience inequality in workload distribution, visibility, and representation, which affects their postcampaign outcomes. Our research highlights the solutions impl…
Street‐level immigrant policy implementation: The role of school counselors
This article contributes to the literature on the pathways of incorporation of undocumented immigrants in the United States by providing insights into the perspectives of street‐level bureaucrats implementing policies seeking to increase college access at the state level. Results from a survey of public school counselors in New Jersey show that most counselors have limited knowledge of the policies that affect undocumented students' access to col…
The leadership challenge: Undocumented youths in social movement coalitions in the United States
This article examines the challenges undocumented youths face when joining and leading social movement coalitions. It relies on a case study of New York and New Jersey to bridge the gap between the literatures on social movement coalitions and undocumented migration. I argue that the success of undocumented youths within a coalition depends on establishing and maintaining leadership over the movement. I show that leadership has implications on yo…
Transportation and immigrant political incorporation
The literature on political participation focuses on resources such as income and social capital in promoting individual engagement. This article highlights the role of transportation as a resource for the political incorporation of immigrants. Using data from 111 interviews with undocumented youths and community organisers in New York and New Jersey, results indicate that youths living in suburban and rural areas are more likely to encounter tra…
Diversity, Leadership, and Authenticity in the Undocumented Youth Movement
The undocumented youth movement is diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, and immigration status. I argue that racial and immigration status diversity has a direct impact on the movement's ability to “expand the scope of conflict,” that is to say recruiting new members, reaching out to elected officials, and establishing representative leadership—elements that are critical to the sustainability and effectiveness of a movement. Findings also indicat…
Leaving the ‘perfect DREAMer’ behind? Narratives and mobilization in immigration reform
This paper focuses on the consequences of the narrative used to support immigration reform by some immigrant activists, and especially how this narrative may negatively impact potential allies. Policies and policy proposals such as the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals have been consistently championed using a specific narrative of undocumented youths which presents them as …
Because She Knew That I Did Not Have a Social”: Ad Hoc Guidance Strategies for Latino Undocumented Students
Understanding the challenges of Latino undocumented students in high school is crucial to improving their success rates in college. Based on interviews with 60 Latino undocumented youths, I explore the barriers to proper educational guidance for this population. Results indicate that undocumented youths often lack accurate information about college, and that schools can provide negative contexts of bureaucratic incorporation. As a result, undocum…
Parlez‐vous français ?” Issues in publishing for French academics
Purpose This paper aims to look at the choices made by academics in terms of publishing, with an emphasis on French scholars. As “publish or perish” has become the norm in many countries, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between publishing and scholars' actual connection with the public, and how it relates to expectations of their influence on society at large. Design/methodology/approach The paper relies on a case study of French …
Broken Promises? Nafta, Immigration, and 'Shadow' Regionalism
The reduction of immigration was never an official objective of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Yet, it was generally supposed to be one of its long-term consequences. Fifteen years later, Mexican immigration to the United States has in fact increased. The agreement has failed to reduce the attractiveness of the U.S. labor market for Mexican workers and to provide sustainable alternatives to immigration. Over the same period of time, Ame…
