  • Gender and Sport

    Open Access•Thomas F Carter, Thomas Carter•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2021

The intersection of gender and sport in anthropology leaves many questions to be asked and investigated. Most of the ethnographic work done has concentrated on gender ideas and questions about how masculinity is embodied through participating in sport. A second line of inquiry is emerging around how the scientific investigation of the materiality of the human body is used to define “woman” in order to regulate female participation in elite sport.…

  • In the Spirit of the Game? Cricket & Changing Notions of Being British in Northern Ireland

    Open Access•Thomas F Carter, Thomas Carter•ARTICLE•Journal of the Society for the…•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This article looks at cricket as a cultural practice that embodies Britishness in Northern Ireland. In general, cricket is mythologically tied to an unchanging, nostalgic vision of quintessential Britishness. As a practice, though, cricket represents varieties of Britishness as well as other identities. In Northern Ireland, being "British" is taken as possessing a specific political position and viewpoint within the context of the sectarian confl…

  • On the Need for an Anthropological Approach to Sport

    Thomas F Carter, Thomas Carter•ARTICLE•Identities•2002

Social relations of power are vital, embedded aspects of all sport. The Olympic credo of "Faster, Higher, Stronger" reflects the inherent ideological embodiment of power in sport. Sport, however, does not occur in a social vacuum, and therefore, who participates, and when, where, and how they participate, are all questions of socially embedded power critical to the study of sport. National states, across the entire ideological gamut, from fascist…

  • Living the Principle: Mormon Polygamous Housing in Nineteenth-Century Utah

    Thomas Carter, Tina B Carter•ARTICLE•Winterthur Portfolio•2000

While it is widely known that many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, better known as Mormons, practiced a form of polygamy during the nineteenth century, the architectural manifestations of this experiment remain largely mysterious. This article looks at houses designed for multiwife families in Utah during the period from 1847, when the Mormons went West, and 1890, when "living the principle" of polygamy was abolished. …

  • The political fallacy of baseball diplomacy

    Open Access•Tom Carter, Thomas Carter•ARTICLE•Peace Review•1999•Cited by: 2

In May 1999 the Cuban national baseball team visited Baltimore to play a second exhibition game (the first was held earlier in the year in Havana) against the Baltimore Orioles. The U.S. media portrayed this cultural exchange as “baseball diplomacy.” As it is usually understood, diplomacy is the practice of international politics between states. Yet, no U.S. government officials were involved in the negotiations in Havana that produced this exhib…
