  • Linking Ego and Moral Development

    Open Access•Charles Levine, Charles G Levine et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2010

This article addresses the relationship between ego and moral development, as represented by the theories of Erikson and Kohlberg. Based on a constructive critique of the structural perspective of Snarey et al. [1983], an alternative way of conceptualizing the relationship between Erikson’s conception of identity formation and Kohlberg’s conception of moral reasoning is presented. In contrast to a purely structural perspective, this alternative v…

  • The Current Formulation of Kohlberg’s Theory and a Response to Critics

    Open Access•Charles Levine, Charles G Levine et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

This article is a synopsis of the monograph Moral Stages: A Current Formulation and a Response to Critics. Recent changes in the theory of moral stages are presented, including a broadening of theoretical and research concerns, differentiation of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ stages, clarification of the form-content distinction, revision of A and B substages, clarification of Stages 6 and 7, discussion of moral action, listing of nine metaethical assumption…

  • What Happened to Agency? Some Observations Concerning the Postmodern Perspective on Identity

    Charles Levine, Charles G Levine•ARTICLE•Identity•2005

I argue that Rattansi and Phoenix's (1997) postmodern perspective on identity perspective is insufficient because it (a) fails to differentiate among types of identity and (b) does not include a clearly defined role for the impact of the ego's agentic capabilities on identity formation. I conclude my discussion by offering a revision of their "key features of rethinking" about identity

  • Self and Society

Open Access•Charles Levine, Charles G Levine et al.•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•1987•Cited by: 6

The relation between individual and collective processes is central to the social sciences, yet difficult to conceptualize because of the necessity of crossing disciplinary boundaries. The result is that researchers in different disciplines construct their own implicit, and often unsatisfactory, models of either individual or collective phenomena, which in turn influence their theoretical and empirical work. In this 1985 book, Drew Westen attempt…

  • Role-taking standpoint and adolescent usage of Kohlberg's conventional stages of moral reasoning

Charles H Levine, Charles Levine et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1976•Cited by: 2•References: 4

By taking into account a respondent's role-taking standpoint, this study proposes that moral judgments coded at Kohlberg's conventional stages can be expected to vary depending upon (a) the identity of the protagonist implicated in the moral dilemma and (b) the nature of the issues raised by the moral dilemmas used. Different groups of respondents were asked to answer three versions of Kohlberg's moral judgment questionnaire. One version implicat…
