  • Development of literacy skills for Japanese deaf and hard-of-hearing children

Open Access•Noboru Takahashi, Yukio Isaka et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2023

We compared the reading development of 77 deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) Japanese children, aged 5–7 (40 females), with 139 of their hearing peers (74 females) in 2018. We assessed each group's phonological awareness (PA), grammar, vocabulary, and reading of hiragana (Japanese orthography children learn first). DHH children showed significant delays in grammar and vocabulary but only a slight delay in PA. Younger DHH children scored better than t…

  • A Nuclear Complex? A Network Visualization of Japan’s Nuclear Industry and Regulatory Elite, 2006 to 2012

    Open Access•Michael C Dreiling, Tomoyasu Nakamura•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2018

After the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi facility on March 11, 2011, in Japan, attempts by civil society actors to reroute the energy priorities of the country inevitably confronted obstacles in what scholars, activists, and journalists alike termed a nuclear complex. The authors’ original network data identify a dense field of overlapping executives and officials in Japan who forge long-term ties among the nuclear energy industry, the state, …

  • Vocabulary and Grammar Differences Between Deaf and Hearing Students

Noboru Takahashi, Yukio Isaka et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2017

The present study investigated the development of literacy skills of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children in Japan. The three components of literacy, vocabulary, orthographic knowledge, and grammatical knowledge were assessed by using the subtests of the Adaptive Tests for Language Abilities (ATLAN), based on the item response theory developed by the authors). The participants consisted of 207 DHH children (first through twelfth grades) in Stu…

  • After the Meltdown

    Michael C Dreiling, Nicholas Lougee et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 31

Since the Kyoto Protocol, and prior to the Fukushima Daiichi meltdown in 2011, a nuclear safety discourse bolstered the industry and supported its promise to meet energy demands while mitigating the risks of global warming. The Fukushima nuclear disaster and humanitarian crisis caused by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011 called the entire nuclear industry into question. However, the silence among established environmental organizations co…

  • Identity Development in Relation to Time Beliefs in Emerging Adulthood

Toshiaki Shirai, Tomoyasu Nakamura et al.•ARTICLE•Identity•2016

This study explores how identity development relates to time beliefs in the transition to adulthood. Time belief was evaluated by delay of gratification, unconcern for the future, and present-mindfulness. Longitudinal data (N = 232) were analyzed at ages 24, 27, and 30 using structural equation modeling. Commitment was positively related to delay of gratification and negatively to unconcern for the future, and exploration was positively related t…

  • Time orientation and identity formation

Open Access•Toshiaki Shirai, Tomoyasu Nakamura et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2012

This study explores how time orientation causes identity formation in emerging adulthood. We assume identity formation can be led by a balanced time orientation, which is defined as a time orientation with which individuals not only pursue a future goal but also combine it with living fully in the present. We used a long‐term longitudinal design. The participants ( N = 181), who were college students at the beginning of this investigation, were f…

  • Environmental Organizations and Communication Praxis

    Open Access•Michael Dreiling, Michael C Dreiling et al.•ARTICLE•Organization & Environment•2008

Environmental organizations (EOs) in the United States display a diverse range of environmental identities and vary in terms of organizational resources, influencing not only the environmental issues that they address but also the methods that they use to address them. Our study investigates the strategies and practices EOs use to communicate with their membership, recruit new participants, and develop alliances with other EOs. This article explo…

  • The orthogonally and the obliquely transformed component analysis in sociometric data

Tomoyasu Nakamura, Shigeo Kashiwagi et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1988

This article presents a new matrix method of analysis of sociometric data, which is more reliable and more efficient than the conventional methods in obtaining full informations relevant to the subgroup structure underlying the sociometric data. The method extracts the orthogonally and the obliquely transformed components, using the procrustean factor rotation in multiple factor analysis. First, a hypothetical target matrix is constructed by prin…
