Authoritative Parenting and the Transmission of Religion in the Netherlands
This study was designed to explore the effect of authoritative parenting, over and above the effect of explicitly religious parenting practices, on the juvenile and adult church attendance of offspring. Data were collected as part of a panel study in which 474 Dutch respondents were questioned in 1983 as youths and in 2007 as adults. In 2007 the respondents retrospectively answered questions about how they were raised by their parents. Analyses r…
Belonging and Believing among Dutch Forty-Year-Olds
This paper reports on a study of the relation between church membership and religious belief among a sample of Dutch forty-year-olds. First it describes developments in church membership between 1983 and 2007, using a longitudinal data set. This results in the identification of five groups: stable non-members, stable nominal members, stable core members, converts and apostates. Next the religious beliefs of these membership groups are studied fro…
Religious Socialization and Church Attendance in the Netherlands from 1983 to 2007
The authors explore the effect of a religious upbringing on church attendance later in life. To this purpose, people who had been interviewed in 1983 as secondary students about their upbringing as well as other characteristics, were interviewed again in 2007 about the same topics. Comparisons between the 1983 and the 2007 data reveal that church attendance dropped significantly among these people during this period. Furthermore, it is shown that…
Praying and coping
This study focuses on different varieties of prayer in relation to different coping styles. A total of 337 Dutch and Flemish people answered a questionnaire comprising Pargament's Religious Coping Scale, a Receptivity Coping Scale, and a Dutch prayer inventory. Three types of prayer were distinguished: the religious, the petitionary, and the meditative prayer. The first two are typically traditional, involving a classical image of a personal God,…
Praying in a Secularized Society
Social scientific studies from the secular Netherlands has pointed out that religious rituals such as praying are still widely present. This study examines the content of the praying practices of the Dutch and distinguishes varieties of prayer by analyzing answers to open-ended questions of a representative Dutch survey (N = 1,008). It is concluded, first, that a majority of the Dutch prays. Second, four varieties of prayer are distinguished: pet…

Praying as a Universalising Variable
Literal and symbolic immortality
Three studies investigated the effect of encouraging participants to believe in an afterlife on the relationship between mortality salience and self-esteem striving. Participants were exposed to essays arguing either in favor of or against the existence of an afterlife, and reminded about death or a control topic. Mortality salience led to increased accuracy ratings of a positive personality description (Studies 1 and 2) and increased striving fo…
The Structure and Variety of Prayer
Although in Europe as a whole and in the Netherlands in particular, church membership is in steady decline, most Dutch youth still pray. In this study, praying is interpreted as a ritual, composed of seven structural elements: need, action, effect, direction, time, place and method. On theoretical grounds, we distinguish four varieties of prayer. In our sample, petitionary prayer and religious prayer were found to coincide. In both, direction (mo…
Magical Healing in Modern Times
Derogation and distancing as terror management strategies
Previous research has revealed that when individuals are confronted with criticism of a personally relevant group, mortality salience can lead to either derogation of the source of criticism or distancing from the group. In this article, the authors investigated closure as a potential moderator of these reactions. In Study 1, mortality salience led to greater derogation of a critic of a relevant group among high-need-for-closure participants but …
The Abstract Image of God
A process of secularisation can be observed in all European countries: church membership declines and religious institutions lose their monopoly. This is strongest among Dutch youngsters, but it does not automatically lead to a loss of religion. Instead it is a process of individualisation of religion. Youngsters nowadays construct a personal framework of meaning by choosing from available religious traditions in a process of bricolage, just as t…
The Psychological Importance of Youth Culture
In the literature, youth culture has been addressed in two distinct ways: the aesthetic approach, which has led to criticism of youth culture, and the empirical approach, in which the functions and benefits of youth culture have been stressed. In this article, Terror Management Theory (TMT) is used to provide a functional approach to youth culture. According to TMT, culture is conceived of as a buffer against the awareness of death. To assess the…
The Netherlands as an Experimental Garden of Religiosity
The religious condition of The Netherlands is the result of an encounter between general processes of European change on the one hand—characterized by individualization, humanization and abstraction—and a historical process peculiar to The Netherlands on the other. Here, the general trend of secularization hides the development of a veritable garden of new and interesting religiosities. Church membership is falling, yet the number of religious gr…
The Double Center of Gravity in Durkheim's Symbol Theory
By studying Dürkheim through a Schopenhauerian lens, the one-sidedly cognitivist and functionalist reception of his social theory can be balanced. Durkheim explicitly rejected such monistic interpretations. His dialectical approach was always aimed at an essentially dualistic perception of man and society, wherein the lower pole, the individual, is central. In Durkheim's symbol theory, this position leads to two kinds of symbols: those that are b…
Images of God in Adolescence
God images of Dutch youngsters were investigated in two research projects. Because previous studies, which applied precoded questions, did not seem to elucidate the way people construct their image of God, a combination of precoded and open questions was used. On the basis of content analysis, a hierarchical model was developed in which the attributes of God were distinguished from the acts of God in various domains. Most respondents did not seem…

Praying Practices
There is very little empirical research about prayer. No convincing psychological theory exists, nor agreement about definitions and basic concepts. In the research which we conducted, open-ended questions were used to detect the meaning of prayer for modern youth. A computerized procedure (TexTable) was used to analyse the answers. The results show that the common prayer of youth can be summarized in one sentence, composed of 7 structural elemen…
