Recognising and Realising the Field of Systems Research in Itself and for Itself: The 2026 Agenda for the Cybersystemic Community
Systems thinking emerged as a transdisciplinary movement that sought to bridge the sciences, humanities and practices of change. Today, it spans many fields but risks losing coherence as its core ideas are repeatedly rediscovered and reapplied without deepening their theoretical roots. This paper draws on the experiences of the cybersystemic community under the roof of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR) and a scoping review …
Testing the role of online group-based supervision for local humanitarian workers following a crisis: A mixed-methods longitudinal study
The 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquakes caused widespread destruction, leaving millions without access to basic needs and services. Caring for Carers (C4C), an online group-based supervision program for Syrian mental health workers, started three months prior to the earthquakes. This study examined the role of this program in supporting the mental and occupational health of the participants following this crisis. A mixed-method longitudinal design was…
When Is the Still‐Face Not the Still‐Face: Mothers' Behavior in the Face‐to‐Face Still‐Face Procedure and Its Relationship to Infant Arousal
The Face‐to‐Face Still‐Face (FF‐SF) procedure has been a popular paradigm to understand infant behavior. The current study examines the validity of mothers' behavior during the Still‐Face phase of the FF‐SF, especially the quality of her neutral face and its impact on infant arousal ( N = 358 ethnically‐diverse mother–infant dyads, Mean infant age = 223 days, SD = 27 days). Results showed that more than half of the mothers in the sample breached …
Reimagining Systems Thinking as Cybersystemic Researching: An Invitation to a Cyber‐Systemic Co‐Inquiry
This paper reimagines the future of systems research as an enacted cybersystemic praxis that moves beyond traditional notions of systems thinking. We argue that systems research is best understood as a reflexive, embodied and situated practice that integrates systemic sensibilities, systems literacy and capabilities in (cyber)systemic co‐inquiry. Drawing on insights from systems theory, cybernetics, complexity science and process philosophy, we c…
Transcending Systems Thinking: Critical Systems Integration and What's Love Got to Do With It
Systems thinking is a promise of wholeness and agency. It appears as the right approach to meet the challenges of the Anthropocene. Yet, to keep its promise, systems thinking needs to critically review itself, the wholeness it integrates and the sense of agency it informs and forms. Transcending systems thinking is a continuous process of critical systems integration. Since the 1980s, this process of further integrating systems thinking in the mi…
Contextualising person-centred mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services: A qualitative study of the preferences and experiences of displaced Syrians in Northwest Syria and Türkiye
Understanding and responding to patient expectations is crucial for providing high-quality, person-centred mental healthcare, but remains underexplored in humanitarian settings. This study examines the preferences and experiences of Syrian mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) service users in Northwest Syria and Türkiye. We conducted structured interviews with 378 displaced Syrians (55% female, mean age: 31 years). Participants complete…
Valuing who we are in relation to others: The ‘ praxis of co ’ in an Anthropocene‐world. The 2025 agenda for the cybersystems community
In our Agenda Essays to date, we have argued the need to frame contemporary circumstances in terms of the Anthropocene‐world we humans have created. We also prioritise the five‐decade‐old, prescient analysis of humanity's predicament as the ‘global problématique.’ Earlier, we advocated for identifying comprehensive modes of ‘collaborative agency’ to better unleash the transformative potential inherent in cybersystems thought and action. In the pr…
Realising metamorphic transformation in the mirror of Tamkeen: Growing a shared understanding from co‐reflected lived experiences
Our shared understanding of the being and becoming of social ecosystems informs and forms their being and becoming. Hence, a process that grows a shared understanding from co‐reflected lived experiences is as much an inquiry process as it is a transformation process. Such a process recognises and realises the evolution of the ontology, epistemology, and axiology of social ecosystems. Such a process recognises and realises humanising social ecosys…
Navigating the polycrisis—governing for transformation: The 2024 agenda for the systems community
The challenges of the Anthropocene were pre‐empted by systems scholars in the exposition of the ‘global problematique’ and are now made manifest in what systems scholars called the polycrisis. These framings alert us to our human circumstances but to date, have done little to transform our manners of being and doing, as the polycrisis is an outcome of a profound governance crisis. Ongoing reflections, building on the framing offered by the global…
Covid-19 stressors and mental health problems amongst women who arrived as refugees and those born in Australia
Women from refugee background residing in high income countries are at greater mental health risk during the COVID-19 pandemic given their higher baseline prevalence of mental disorders, trauma exposures and social adversities. During the COVID-19 pandemic we drew on data from wave-4 of the WATCH cohort study, collected between October 2019 and June 2021. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis to compare the prevalence of common mental disorders…
Growing a community of conversation and understanding: The 2023 agenda for the systems community
In his 1970 report to the Club of Rome, Hasan Özbekhan compiled an extensive collection of intersecting issues confronting humanity—the Global Problématique. Alas, half a century later, we find ourselves even further entrenched in this network of complex, systemic issues that some have framed the Anthropocene, a period new to human history. Collectively, we must take seriously the question: what purposeful action will aid human flourishing, creat…
Rethinking agency—The 2022 agenda for the systems community
Five clusters of concern arising from IFSR‐facilitated conversations with its organisational members are used to invite the broader systems community to rethink agency. It is argued that by addressing the cluster elements, potential will be co‐created for the systems community as a whole to help citizens venture beyond failing responses to the global problematique and the Anthropocene‐creating thinking in which we humans are trapped. The five clu…

Community Mental Health Center Visits and Community Mobility of People with Serious Mental Illnesses: A Facilitator or Constraint
Longitudinal path analysis of depressive symptoms and functioning among women of child-rearing age in postconflict Timor-Leste
This longitudinal study indicates that exposure to the traumas of mass conflict and subsequent depressive symptoms play an important role in pathways leading to functional impairment in the postconflict period among women of child-rearing age. Our study, conducted in Timor-Leste, involved an analytic sample of 1292 women recruited at antenatal clinics in the capital and its surrounding districts. Women were re-interviewed at home 2 years later (7…
