Empowering digital public health: A study on the mechanisms by which the application of digital technology drives social entrepreneurial intentions in the health sector among university students
Amidst the tide of the rapid development of digital public health, digital technology has become a core tool driving university students to address social pain points such as health inequality and engage in social innovation. Based on social innovation theory, this study constructs a multiple mediation model of “digital technology application––digital health practice literacy––psychological capital––social entrepreneurial intention,” aiming to ex…
The road to prosperity: Material well-being in China through the lens of an in-use stock database
In-use stocks capture a core dimension of material well-being by reflecting the tangible conditions of daily life. As such, they form a key component of composite well-being indices and offer a tangible alternative to monetary metrics that can be difficult to compare across regions. In this study, we introduce the cMAC–EEEs (city MAterial Cycles and MAnufactured Capital–Electronic and Electrical Equipment) database—a novel dataset that covers per…
Urban metabolism as a pathway to advance Nature-based Solutions for climate-resilient cities
Rapid urbanisation has stimulated profound socio-economic transformation while intensifying systemic urban risks such as flooding and urban heat. These climate-induced stresses underscore the imperative of resilience-oriented urban frameworks. Existing research highlights Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as pivotal strategies for climate mitigation and adaptation, yet their widespread implementation remains constrained by persistent barriers. Urban m…
The association between type 2 diabetes and asthma incidence: A longitudinal analysis considering genetic susceptibility
T2D is associated with an increased risk of developing asthma, irrespective of genetic susceptibility. These findings underscore the importance of incorporating glucose regulation strategies into asthma prevention efforts
Language, literacy, and media experiences at home and Chinese dual language development
Music Characteristics and Regional Differences in (SHE) Ethnic Minority Folk Songs: A Comparative Analysis of Ningde and Eastern Fujian Regions
Tucked away in the stunning province of Fujian in southeast China, the region has a cultural tapestry as varied and vibrant as its breath-taking scenery. Through the analysis and coding of folk songs from four different geographical regions in China (Fujian and Ningde), this paper aimed to determine the degree of mutual interaction and integration of the musical cultures of the Shen and Han nationalities into modernity. It did this by developing …
Urbanization inequality: Evidence from vehicle ownership in Chinese cities
Unequal outcomes resulting from urbanization can pose a significant challenge to sustainable development. Vehicles are an important urbanization dimension as a critical component of urban infrastructure by providing mobility and accessibility to social services. China’s vehicle ownership ( referred to as in-use vehicle stocks ) has been growing quickly since 2000, but its per capita stocks are still much lower than that in developed economies. Th…
Comprehension skills of Chinese-English dual language learners: Relations across languages and associations with language richness at home
Chinese-English dual language learners (Chinese DLLs) are a growing population in the US. Existing studies of preschool-aged Chinese DLLs mostly focused on single-word vocabulary and rarely explored other skills important for school readiness. In the current study, we examined Chinese DLLs’ development of receptive vocabulary and comprehension of semantic concepts (i.e. spatial and quantification expressions) in both English and Chinese (Mandarin…
Material metabolism and associated environmental impacts in Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration
Rapid urbanization has resulted in significant bulk materials use, raising concerns over associated environmental impacts and sustainability challenges. However, a significant gap remains in the city‐level analysis of bulk materials production, use, and associated environmental impacts in China. This study calculated the stocks and flows of 13 bulk materials and their associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across nine cities in the Pearl River…
Mapping manufactured capital in mainland China with harmonized night‐time light images between 1992 and 2018
The manufactured capital, usually denoted as material stocks from an industrial ecology perspective, has thus far received wide attention in sustainability and circularity science. Sustainable resource management should be rooted in detailed knowledge of manufactured capital accumulation in society at a high spatial resolution. Previous studies demonstrated that night‐time light (NTL) data provide a great opportunity for monitoring material stock…
Comparing apples to manzanas and oranges to naranjas: A new measure of English‐Spanish vocabulary for dual language learners
The valid assessment of vocabulary development in dual‐language‐learning infants is critical to developmental science. We developed the Dual Language Learners English‐Spanish (DLL‐ES) Inventories to measure vocabularies of U.S. English‐Spanish DLLs. The inventories provide translation equivalents for all Spanish and English items on Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) short forms; extended inventories based on CDI long forms; and Spanish la…
Age and Racial Disparities in the Utilization of Anticancer, Antihypertension, and Anti-diabetes Therapies, and in Mortality in a Large Population-Based Cohort of Older Women with Breast Cancer
Dual Language Development of Chinese 3- and 4-Year-Olds: Associations with the Family Context and Teachers’ Language Use
Research findings: This study examined the dual language development and experience of the understudied Chinese dual language learners (DLLs). Twice in the preschool/pre-k year (about 4 months apart), we assessed 39 Chinese 3- and 4-year-old DLLs’ receptive vocabularies in English and Chinese, interviewed 37 parents about the language use and richness of each language in the family context, and video-recorded activities in 10 classrooms to analyz…
Quantifying urban mass gain and loss by a GIS‐based material stocks and flows analysis
Rapid urbanization generates substantial demand, use, and demolition waste of construction materials. However, the existing top‐down or bottom‐up frameworks combining material flow analysis (MFA) and geographic information system (GIS) tend to underestimate both input and output of construction material flows due to insufficient descriptions of key processes in building construction and demolition. To address this limitation, this study identifie…

Spatio-temporal dynamics of evapotranspiration on the Tibetan Plateau from 2000 to 2010
Evapotranspiration (ET) is a key process of the climate system because it links water, energy and carbon cycles. In this study we modified a Penman–Monteith based algorithm to estimate ET on the Tibetan Plateau at a 1 km spatial resolution for the period 2000–2010 using meteorological and satellite remote sensing data. The results showed that the average annual ET on the Tibetan Plateau was 350.3 mm year–1 and decreased from the southeast toward …
Daily sleep duration and risk of metabolic syndrome among middle-aged and older Chinese adults: Cross-sectional evidence from the Dongfeng–Tongji cohort study
Our findings suggested that longer daytime napping duration rather than nighttime sleeping duration was associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome in females. The findings have significant implications for further studies to explore the appropriate sleep duration for middle-aged and older adults
Why Is Infant Language Learning Facilitated by Parental Responsiveness?
Parents’ responsiveness to infants’ exploratory and communicative behaviors predicts infant word learning during early periods of language development. We examine the processes that might explain why this association exists. We suggest that responsiveness supports infants’ growing pragmatic understanding that language is a tool that enables intentions to be socially shared. Additionally, several features of responsiveness—namely, its temporal con…
Reciprocal influences between maternal language and children's language and cognitive development in low-income families
We examined reciprocal associations between early maternal language use and children's language and cognitive development in seventy ethnically diverse, low-income families. Mother–child dyads were videotaped when children were aged 2;0 and 3;0. Video transcripts were analyzed for quantity and lexical diversity of maternal and child language. Child cognitive development was assessed at both ages and child receptive vocabulary was assessed at age …

In this chapter, we examine the sociocultural context of infant development, with primary emphasis on parent–infant communicative interactions. We focus on the cultural context of development as societies (and local communities) around the world have different sets of views and practices around raising children. We focus on infancy, as it involves rapid brain growth and impressive achievements in language and social communication. We focus on par…
Language experiences and vocabulary development in Dominican and Mexican infants across the first 2 years
We longitudinally investigated parental language context and infants' language experiences in relation to Dominican American and Mexican American infants' vocabularies. Mothers provided information on parental language context, comprising measures of parents' language background (i.e., childhood language) and current language use during interviews at infants' birth. Infants' language experiences were measured at ages 14 months and 2 years through…
Rising methane emissions in response to climate change in Northern Eurasia during the 21st century
We used a biogeochemistry model, the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM), to examine the methane (CH4) exchanges between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere in Northern Eurasia from 1971 to 2100. Multiple model simulations using various wetland extent datasets and climate change scenarios were conducted to assess the uncertainty of CH4 fluxes, including emissions and consumption. On the basis of these simulations we estimate the current net e…
