  • The US, The UN and the Korean War

Robert Barnes•BOOK•The US, The UN and the Korean War•2014

Military, social and economic historians have long appreciated the significance of the conflict in Korea in shaping the post-war world. The policy of containment was formed, China was established as an important military power, and the US increased its military expenditure fourfold as a result of a conflict which killed over 33,000 Americans. What has been less appreciated is the role played by the United Nations and the British Commonwealth in i…

  • Translating the Sacred

R H Barnes, Kirsten Malmkjaer et al.•BOOK•The Oxford handbook of…•2011

This article discusses the translation of the Bible, the Qur'an, and Buddhist texts. The Septuagint is a Jewish Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. The Vulgate is a Christian Latin translation of the whole Bible, i.e. Old and New Testaments. Since 1800, the Bible has been translated into versions of widely spoken languages…

  • Branding an Aggressor

    R H Barnes, Robert Barnes•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Studies•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The crisis following China's intervention in the Korean War led to a significant rift between the United States and the Commonwealth at the United Nations (UN). This article examines the conditions under which the Commonwealth became united and was able to directly influence UN decision-making. It concludes that, when united, the Commonwealth could not easily be ignored by Washington, and thereby acted as an agent of constraint upon the Western s…

  • Drug use and suicide ideation and behavior among North Carolina public school students

W Michael Felts, T Chernier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Cited by: 11

We used data from 3064 respondents to the 1990 North Carolina Youth Risk Behavior Survey to examine the relationship between adolescent drug use and suicide ideation and behavior. Principal components analysis followed by varimax rotation was performed separately on the drug use and suicide items. Correlation coefficients computed between the two sets of factor scores and comparison of mean drug use factor scores revealed that drug use, particula…
