    Open Access•Elena Loizidou•ARTICLE•Journal of Extreme Anthropology•2026

This article offers a critique of the lord and bondsman scene from Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit (2004[1807]). The scene depicts the struggle between these two protagonists for recognition and material possessions. The outcome of the struggle, according to Hegel and his interpreters is life changing for the protagonists. They gain self-consciousness or awareness. The Lord and the Bondsman recognise that they are essential to each other, both fo…

  • Anarchism

    Elena Loizidou•BOOK•Anarchism•2022

The term anarchism derives from the Greek word ἀναρχία meaning ‘without ruler or leader, and without law’. Although the roots of the word can be traced back to Ancient Greece, anarchism as a political ideology is relatively new. Anarchism developed as a political ideology at the end of the eighteenth century at the time of the emergence of the modern State. And, as is well known, anarchism developed both a politics and a way of life that did not …

  • Flesh, Bones and Other Matters

Elena Loizidou, Sara Ramshaw•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Law Journal•2008

Hi, Writing-begins, without you, without I, without law, without knowing, without light, without hope, without bonds, without anyone close to you, for if world history goes on, you are not in it, you are 'in' 'hell' , and hell is where I am not but where it is me, although I have no place, feels itself dying again through all time, where not-me drags me further and further from me, and where what is left of me is nothing more than suffering witho…

  • Criminal Law and Punishment

    Open Access•Elena Loizidou•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article sets out to question the relationship between criminal law, punishment and prohibition. The argument is made that criminal law is not founded upon prohibitive grounds but rather on permissive grounds. Criminal law does not operate as a set of prohibitive rules, whereby the rule breaker is punished, but rather as a system that is indexed by permission and particularly by the slogan ‘enjoy without restraints!’ If criminal law is viewed…

  • The love bug and the melancholic drag queen or a reflection on the cultural/political "grounds" of subjects as sexual

    Elena Loizidou•ARTICLE•Journal for Cultural Research•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The notion of the subject and its formation has long been at the centre of discussion in critical theory. Identity discourse constructed a passive subject made up of qualities such us gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and age. Poststructuralist thought on the other hand invested its critical mind in producing a mobile subject, one that is both the product and the producer of practices, power and processes. While identity discourse put qualities …
