Combined effects of human pressures on Europe’s marine ecosystems
Marine ecosystems are under high demand for human use, giving concerns about how pressures from human activities may affect their structure, function, and status. In Europe, recent developments in mapping of marine habitats and human activities now enable a coherent spatial evaluation of potential combined effects of human activities. Results indicate that combined effects from multiple human pressures are spread to 96% of the European marine are…
The expectations and experiences of first-year students in Art & Design
This article reports on a survey of the expectations and experiences of first-year students who were enrolled in 2010 on programmes in Art & Design in the United Kingdom. The survey covered 20 institutions and received 778 usable responses. The results indicate considerable variation in both expectations and experiences, and provide a basis for assisting institutions in the UK to enhance their curricular provision at a time when they are faced wi…
Tributes to Selma Jeanne Cohen
In 1953, we sat in a small, harshly lit room in the old High School of Performing Arts building on 46th Street and Broadway, our legs hanging, perched or straggled on chairs in front of us. We were tired from hours of technique and rehearsals, coming straight from the studio in our worn tights and warmers. A small woman with red curls and glasses spoke intensely about Louis XIV's court ballets; she evoked a world of magic, opulence, and beauty. I…

Merce Cunningham's the seasons
In 1946, Merce Cunningham and John Cage received a commission for their most ambitious work so far, from a rather unlikely source. Lincoln Kirstein had recently founded Ballet Society with the primary purpose of providing George Balanchine with a situation in which he could make ballets without concern for commercial considerations. The first Ballet Society program, on November 20, 1946, had consisted of Balanchine's The Four Temperaments and his…

Measuring Measurement Error in Economic Time Series
A spectral decomposition method is described for obtaining an upper bound on the amount of measurement error in a time series. The method is applied to generated data and to M1b, real GNP, and the CPI. The bounds provide insight into both the amount of measurement error in these series and the stochastic specification of the errors
Archives of the Dance (2) Building An Archive
Anyone who has attempted to work in the field of dance scholarship knows how exasperatingly difficult it is to research the history even of contemporary dance companies, let alone those of the past. How often, for example, do we find programmes, posters, and flyers for dance performances which give only the day of the month, not the year, when they took place? Dancers themselves, notoriously, have short memories for such things; they may remember…
