  • The great philosophy of science war

    Martin Bloom•ARTICLE•Social Work Research•1995

The great philosophy of science war has been waged for centuries regarding the “correct” way to understand human behavior, especially as a basis for helping people help themselves. For Francis Bacon, the correct way involved seeking empirical understanding as the basis for action. For Auguste Comte, the correct way was largely empirical, but with the recognition of the place of the theoretical in science. For Rudolph Carnap, it was largely the lo…

  • Evaluating a Self-Help Approach to Helping a Phobic Child: A Profile Analysis

Open Access•Mary Secret, Martin Bloom•ARTICLE•Research on Social Work Practice•1994

This is a report of the practitioner evaluation of clinical social work in afield setting; it involved helping a 9-year-old girl with a severe phobia of dogs. A single-system design is used to evaluate the outcome of contextual therapy, a real-life desensitization approach. An instigative method, self-help training for the child, was directed by a clinical social worker who was not present during the intervention. Treatment appeared to produce a …

  • Ethics and the Single-System Design

Martin Bloom, John Orme et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•1993

This paper offers a beginning sketch of a code of ethics for evaluators using single-system designs. Extending the research section of the NASW Code of Ethics, this paper attempts to add the evaluative dimension to basic Hippocratlc ethics-from "providing help" to "providing demonstrable help," and from "doing no harm" to "demonstrating that no harm is done." Because single-system designs oblige practitioners to be more specific in their practice…

Geismar, who contributions to social work research include penetrating investigations on poverty, the multi-problem family, delinquency, and child-care. For nearly forty years, he has blended theory, research, and practice with persistent energy and vitality, and has set an important benchmark in social work scholarship. It is import…

  • Evaluation of Single Interventions

Martin Bloom, Patricia Butch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Service Research•1979

This paper presents an approach to evaluating cases in which workers see clients in effect only one time. If case records are derailed enough to reconstruct a baseline and outcome after intervention, then a conventional single subject design is performed. When such information is lacking, then identified client goals and results are assembled to form an indicator of success or nonsuccess. An overall "batting average "is constructed from the resul…
