The importance of relational pathways into STEM
STEM participation is at record highs, yet scientific knowledge often fails to translate into effective responses to urgent social and environmental challenges, resulting in a growing knowledge–action gap. This study examines how early college students’ STEM career motivations are likely to either reinforce or disrupt this gap, focusing on the role that prior STEM experiences play in how they intend to “do” STEM. Drawing on rich survey data about…
From policy to plate
Early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings are pivotal in shaping children's dietary behaviours. While the importance of centre-based nutrition policies (CBNPs) in shaping early childhood nutrition environments is well established, little is known about how these policies are interpreted and implemented by those working in the sector. In particular, limited research has explored the perspectives of both service-level (ECEC employees) and …

Nutrition environments in early childhood education

To also consider the applicability of an existing CBNP assessment tool and policy alignment with best practice food provision and feeding practices. Design: Cross-sectional online study to assess written ECE CBNP using the Wellness Child Care A…
Negotiating quotidian justice in the science classroom
In this conceptual paper, we explore how science teachers might enact social justice through their everyday science instruction. Drawing on empirical literature and our own K-12 teaching experience, we develop a heuristic for mapping classroom discourses to engage in action and reflection to change both the world of the classroom community, and the world beyond the school. We suggest how this heuristic can be used for justice-oriented science tea…
Symptoms of sleep problems and adherence to dietary guidelines in older women
Objective: This study examined adherence to dietary guidelines and symptoms of sleep problems (e.g. taking a long time to fall sleep or waking up early) and their associations in a sample of older Australian women (68–73 years of age). Design: This was a population-based cross-sectional study. Adherence to the dietary guidelines was measured using a validated FFQ and reported as a diet quality score. Symptoms of sleep problems were measured using…

God, Otherness, and Community
Many critics have argued that the alterity of God is negated within Hegel's philosophy of religion. This paper will present the position that Hegel's approach to theology depends on a rigorous hermeneutic which does not negate the meaning and power of religious language and practice as they are found within various Christian traditions, though it does challenge the view that God is absolutely “other” than the human. Further, Hegel's approach to t…
