  • Anxious Apocalypse

    Open Access•Brian White•ARTICLE•Humanities•2023

Science fiction (SF) developed as a self-identified genre in Japan in the 1950s and quickly underwent a boom in the 1960s. Throughout this period, SF literature, film, and television were tightly intertwined industries, sharing production personnel, textual tropes, and audiences. As these industries entered global circulation with the hope of finding recognition and success in the international SF community, however, they encountered the contradi…

  • Asakusa's urban space and the incompleteness of the novel –The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa

    H WADA, Brian White•ARTICLE•Japan Forum•2018•References: 2

Despite its frequent characterization as a ‘cinematic’ novel, Kawabata Yasunari's The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa uses linguistic expression's inherently selective nature to create a rich, yet always incomplete, picture of Asakusa in the reader's mind. Drawing both on intertextual references to contemporary accounts of Asakusa and on concrete references to touchstones of the neighborhood, Kawabata created a ‘mental map’ of Asakusa that would have dif…

  • Caring and the Teaching of English

Brian White•ARTICLE•Research in the Teaching of English•2003

This article examines the notion of caring in the teaching of English. Although Nel Noddings’s work has paved the way for more caring approaches to teaching, aspects of her formulation must be reconsidered in order to ensure caring instruction for the most powerless and most needy students

    Open Access•Brian White•ARTICLE•International Studies Review•2003•References: 2

Maura Adshead's Developing European Regions? can be located in the general area of public policy analysis applied within the specific context of the European Union. In it, Adshead offers a comparative analysis of EU regional policy, with empirical cases drawn from regions in three different EU countries: Thuringen in Germany, Limerick in Ireland, and Merseyside in the United Kingdom. Her objective is to establish the extent to which the regional …

  • The European Challenge to Foreign Policy Analysis

    Open Access•Brian White•ARTICLE•European Journal of International…•1999•Cited by: 9•References: 30

This article explores `European foreign policy' as an important new empirical domain of foreign policy and also as a challenging vehicle for evaluating the current status of Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA). It begins by identifying the weaknesses of the dominant institutionalist mode of analysis of foreign policy activity in Europe which include a restrictive definition of `foreign policy' in this context. A case is then made for arguing that criti…

  • Issues in World Politics

Brian White, Richard Little et al.•CHAPTER•Issues in World Politics•1997

The dramatic television pictures of the dismantling of the Berlin Wall, that powerful symbol of the Cold War, may already have faded from memory, but the hopes and expectations generated by the set of events between 1989 and 1991 known collectively as the end of the Cold War, have not. Accounts of world politics written in the 1990s have all highlighted the idea that we are living in an exciting new world in which political leaders struggle to co…

  • The concept of detente

    Open Access•Brian White•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•1981•References: 5

1980 was not a good year for detente. The year began with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the ensuing state of East-West relations was reflected at the year's end in a deadlocked C.S.C.E. Review Conference in Madrid. The second phase of the Conference began with a sombre declaration by the United States' delegate that ‘detente does not today exist’ though it remains ‘an objective to be sought’. The invasion of Afghanistan gave sustenance t…
