Hezbollah's state capture in Lebanon
This article examines Hezbollah’s state capture in Lebanon as entangled in the country’s systemic corruption, which has led the Lebanese state to be captured by its ruling elite. The article analyzes how this domestic entanglement, in addition to international factors, allowed Hezbollah to exercise state capture at the political, economic and security levels. The article ends with arguing that reversing the effects of Hezbollah’s state capture ca…

The Martyrs' Revolutions
This article examines popular representations of modern martyrs in the Arab world, comparing national models of martyrdom representations prior to the Arab Spring, namely those from Iran, Palestine and Hizbullah in Lebanon, to portrayals of martyrs during and after the Arab Spring. It argues that the Arab Spring brought forth a new model for the martyr in the Arab world, which (a) moves the production of martyrs' images from the state to the citi…
Image Politics in the Middle East
Politics in the Middle East is now ‘seen’ and the image is playing a central part in processes of political struggle. This is the first book in the literature to engage directly with these changing ways of communicating politics in the region - and particularly with the politics of the image, its power as a political tool. Lina Khatib presents a cross-country examination of emerging trends in the use of visuals in political struggles in the Middl…
Qatar's foreign policy
Qatar has become an Arab country with a high international profile and an ambitious foreign policy, particularly as a result of its role in the Arab Spring. It has cultivated a reputation as a political mediator and a key source of foreign aid. Following the Libyan uprising, Qatar demonstrated further political adaptability in leading regional action against the Gaddafi regime. However, this foreign policy does not appear to be built on long-term…
Public Diplomacy 2.0
The internet is enabling new approaches to diplomacy. The US Digital Outreach Team (DOT) is one such initiative, aiming to engage directly with citizens in the Middle East by posting messages about US foreign policy on internet forums. This case study assesses the DOT's work. Does this method provide a promising move towards a more interactive and individualized approach to connecting with the Middle East? What are the strategic challenges faced …

The Politics of Iranian Cinema
If there is one element of the politics of Iranian cinema that is understudied,it is that of the relationship between Iranian films and the Iranian film audience.Saeed Zeydabadi-Nejad’s book, The Politics of Iranian Cinema: Filmand Society in the Islamic Republic, fills this glaring gap by providing aunique insight into how Iranian films are received in Iran; what political andsocial debates they spark; and how they form part of a larger nexus of…

Lebanese Cinema
Modern Lebanese cinema can best be explored in the context of the Civil War, in part because almost all the Lebanese films made since its outset in 1975 have been about this war. Lina Khatib takes 1975 Beirut as her starting point, and takes us right through to today for this, the first major book on Lebanese cinema and its links with politics and national identity. She examines how Lebanon is imagined in such films as Jocelyn Saab’s “Once Upon a …
Gender, Citizenship and Political Agency in Lebanon
This paper examines the condition of women as political agents in Lebanon in the context of legislation and political participation. It focuses on the effect of the Civil War on women's conditions of living in Lebanon, and their lives in the post-war period. War had negative effects on women, reinforcing their patriarchal subjugation, furthering their economic deprivation, and diverting attention from issues like women's rights, which have only a…
Violence and masculinity in Maroun Baghdadi's Lebanese war films
In this article I discuss three of Lebanese filmmaker Maroun Baghdadi's films that were made during the Lebanese Civil War: Little Wars, Land of Honey of Incense and Outside Life. The article shows how the three films use male characters to comment on the non-rational nature of the war, focusing on the representation of violence in the films. Violence is discussed as a condition of masculinity, but also as a performance aiming at the assertion of…

Today the world's media have a pressing need to understand and interpret the modern Middle East. In this timely book, Lina Khatib examines how contemporary American cinema and the cinemas of the Arab world contribute to this global preoccupation in their representations of Middle Eastern politics. This examination of Hollywood as the dominant Western interpreter of the Arab World also views the Arab world in terms of how it perceives itself and o…

Nationalism and Otherness
This article focuses on the representation of Islamic fundamentalism in contemporary Egyptian films. It aims to go beyond orientalism-based studies consumed with analysing the West’s representation of, and thus power over, the East. The article problematizes discourses examining fundamentalism’s role as the West’s Other and the source of its identity by analysing the complicated political role that fundamentalism plays in Egypt as an ‘Islamic’ de…

The politics of space
This article analyses the different ways contemporary American and Egyptian films construct and understand space in the context of Middle Eastern politics. The article contrasts Hollywood’s relationship with space as one about mastery, mirroring America’s ‘from-above’ approach to Middle Eastern politics, with the Egyptian films’ more intimate portrayal of space, where conflicts are more localized and closer to home. Space is explored as both a ph…
Communicating Islamic Fundamentalism as Global Citizenship
This article discusses Islamic fundamentalism as forming an imagined community functioning within and beyond the nation, and therefore communicating a local/global identity. Through the use of textual and network analysis, the article focuses on the Internet and its uses by various Islamic fundamentalist groups across the globe. The article argues that the Internet is used by the groups as a “portable homeland” that allows them to strengthen thei…
