Does Sustainable Tourism Development Enhance Destination Prosperity
Prosperity is one of the five critical areas for Sustainable Development according to the 2030 Agenda. This research develops a prosperity model for a tourism destination and examines stakeholders’ perception of the role of sustainable tourism development in enhancing the prosperity. A set of 18 sustainability indicators were used and identified through a hybrid model that combines results from a systematic literature search and four-stage conver…
Challenges Encountered by Newcomers with Disabilities in Canada
Through a secondary data analysis of administrative data of the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) between 2003 and 2013, we aim to understand the interlocking challenges encountered by newcomers with disabilities in Canada that contribute to this population’s financial hardship. Our findings show that newcomers with disabilities on ODSP were more likely to have post-secondary education, to be older adults, to be married, common-law, and t…

The Learning, Earning and Parenting (Leap) Program of Ontario Works Two Decades On
Although scholarship on social assistance (or welfare) has proliferated over the years, there remains a dearth of literature on the Learning, Earning and Parenting (LEAP) program for teenage parents. We followed two LEAP cohorts (Cohort One: 2003-8; Cohort Two: 2009-14) over five years to explore how many had stayed, shifted programs (e.g. to the disability program) or left social assistance entirely. Exit rates, while higher for Cohort One (51.3…
Managing Security Issues and the Hidden Dangers of Wearable Technologies
Advances in mobile computing have provided numerous innovations that make peoples daily lives easier and more convenient. However, as technology becomes more ubiquitous, corresponding risks increase as well. Managing Security Issues and the Hidden Dangers of Wearable Technologies examines the positive and negative ramifications of emerging wearable devices and their potential threats to individuals, as well as organizations. Highlighting socio-et…
Vestiges of the medical model
Although ample literature exists on workfare in Ontario, Canada, research on the social assistance programme for disabled people, the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), is relatively scant. What we do know points to similar shortcomings. We present a critical disability study considering four policy domains to explore how disabled people are identified and accommodated in Ontario. Discussing the principles of universal design, we argue fo…
Aboriginal Populations
This edited collection provides a valuable overview of Aboriginal demography, with a primary yet not exclusive emphasis upon Canadian research. It provides the reader with much insight not only into the major demographic, sociological, and health trends to characterize Aboriginal peoples, but also some of the most serious conceptual and methodological issues that hinder research of this nature. With additional contributions from the United States…
The dark side of ERP implementations
This paper explores end-user perceptions of poorly implemented enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) from the perspective of a primary frontline user. This exploration analyses three case studies – from Australia, the United Kingdom and Denmark. Through these cases, we find three areas of concern: the reaction of implemented systems to existing work processes; the suspicion among workers that management has a hidden agenda in implementing an…

Family Change and Economic Well‐being in Canada
This paper examines the relationship between family change and economic well‐being among recent immigrant families with children to Canada during the 1977 to 1997 period. Whereas the average income to needs ratio of all Canadian families with children is up modestly over this period, this study documents a substantial decline in the average level of economic well‐being of recent immigrants. In this context, this study draws attention to the relev…
Child Poverty and Family Structure in Canada, 1981-1997
This paper examines the relationship between family structure and child poverty in Canada over the 1981-1997 period. While recognizing the many methodological and conceptual difficulties encountered in efforts to document child poverty over time, two alternate indicators are used, Statistics Canada's official low income cut-offs, and an alternate indicator of "deep poverty". Using the Survey of Consumer Finances (1981, 1989 and 1997), trends in l…
Family Relations, Low Income, and Child Outcomes
This paper examines conditions that are more likely to lead to positive or negative child outcomes in intact, female lone-parent and reconstituted families. Family type is found to be more important than low income in predicting a set of behavioural, emotional, and psychological difficulties. After establishing measurement equivalence across family types, multiple group analysis using structural equation modelling shows that the explanatory facto…
