  • Development of a structured process for fair allocation of critical care resources in the setting of insufficient capacity

Open Access•Tim Cook, Kim Gupta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medical Ethics•2021

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic there was widespread concern that healthcare systems would be overwhelmed, and specifically, that there would be insufficient critical care capacity in terms of beds, ventilators or staff to care for patients. In the UK, this was avoided by a threefold approach involving widespread, rapid expansion of critical care capacity, reduction of healthcare demand from non-COVID-19 sources by temporarily pausing much of norm…

  • “Almost Too Late”

Open Access•Tim Cook, Matthew Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Historical Review•2021

This article will assess the role of Canada’s Merchant Navy during the Second World War and appraise shifting government attitudes towards the civilian mariners in veterans’ legislation in the postwar period. By examining the factors that contributed to the civilian mariners’ initial exclusion as veterans, this study sheds light on the complex process whereby the state evaluates and then reassesses what is owed to those who serve. The redress cam…

  • Redressing Canada’s Second World War Narrative

    Open Access•Tim Cook•ARTICLE•War & Society•2020

In early 1942, 23,000 Japanese Canadians on the West Coast were forcibly relocated against their will to the interior of Canada after Japan entered the war against the Allies. This forced relocation left deep scars in that community. Decades later, Japanese Canadians mounted a redress campaign for an official apology and financial restitution. This provocation examines that campaign and explores how it has shaped Canada’s constructed memory of th…

Some forty thousand Canadians served in the Afghanistan War from 2001 to 2011 in active operations, while training missions continued until 2014. During this time, 158 Canadians were killed and close to 1,900 physically wounded (209). Countless other unseen wounds were suffered by military personnel, as well as by aid workers, journalists, and police who served in noncombat roles. One of Canada’s two national newspapers, the Globe and Mail, has p…

‘Trench slang is a language all its own. No dictionary will give you the meaning of half its words.’ This claim appeared in the soldiers’ paper The Listening Post, one of the Canadian trench newspapers that was an outlet for soldiers’ writing, cartoons, and culture. Among trench soldiers there was also a vibrant oral culture, which included new slang, words, and phrases. A study of swearing and slang reveals another way to better understand the s…

Canadian soldiers had a fierce reputation for collecting souvenirs on the Western Front in the Great War. Almost every soldier engaged in ‘souveneering’, in the hope of finding trinkets, treasures, and relics. Yet why would soldiers collect souvenirs in a war of terrible destruction? The article explores the value and meaning of souvenirs during and after the war, and sheds light on the social history of soldiers and the constructed memory and me…

  • The Singing War

Tim Cook•ARTICLE•The American Review of Canadian…•2009

Singing was an important leisure activity for Canadian soldiers serving overseas in the Great War. Soldiers sang popular songs of the day and religious hymns, while also parodying them to better suit their wartime experience. Singing was a group activity that brought men together, forged bonds of comradeship, reinforced belonging in the group, and helped the soldiers endure the strain of unending combat and service. Wartime songs reveal the cultu…
