  • Factors Affecting Code Status in a University Hospital Intensive Care Unit

Lauren J Van Scoy, Michael Sherman et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2013

The authors collected data on diagnosis, hospital course, and end-of life preparedness in patients who died in the intensive care unit (ICU) with '"full code" status (defined as receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation), compared with those who didn't. Differences were analyzed using binary and stepwise logistic regression. They found no differences in demographics, comorbidities, ventilator, hospital, or ICU days between groups. No-code patients …

  • Assisted Living in Rural America: Results From a National Survey

Open Access•CATHERINE HAWES, Charles D Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2005

Context: Expanding the availability of long‐term care (LTC) services and making them more responsive to consumer preferences is an important goal, particularly for elderly people living in rural areas who tend to be older and have greater functional limitations but less access to the range of LTC options available in metropolitan areas. One option that has been growing in popularity is assisted‐living facilities (ALFs). Purpose and Methods: This …

Objectives. We examined differences in quality of care among nursing homes in locales of varying degrees of rurality. Methods. We classified locales into 4 classes according to rurality. We analyzed a 10% sample of nursing home admissions in the United States in 2000 (n=198613) to estimate survival models for 9 quality indicators. Results. For postacute admissions, we observed significant differences in rates of decline for residents in facilitie…

  • Family narratives: Internal representations of family relationships and affective themes

    Open Access•Michael Sherman, Michael H Sherman•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1990•References: 4

Family narratives provide a window for viewing aspects of past and present family relationships. There appear to be meaningful variations among families with respect to their narrative recounting of family events. This paper describes results of a pilot study designed to elicit family narratives using a structured, multigenerational family interview with parental couples. A structured, multigenerational family interview seems to have clinical uti…

  • Attachment: The parental perspective

Open Access•Inge Bretherton, Zeynep Biringen et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1989•References: 13

In the course of daily transactions, caregivers and children construct internal working models of self and other in the attachment relationship (Bowlby, 1969). The function of such working models is to guide an individual's own behavior toward the attachment partner and to interpret and forecast the partner's behavior. So far, however, research on internal working models has largely focused on attachment from the filial rather than the parental p…

  • Nixon and Arms Control

Michael E Sherman, Michael Sherman•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1969•Cited by: 1

An article of this kind, offering some early guesses about the prospects for arms control under the Nixon administration, is a risky enterprise. We are still peering through a fog of tentative and fragmentary statements, made by men who have not yet settled into their jobs or worked out their methods for dealing with one another. None the less, there is already enough evidence to suggest that the widespread pessimism about the Nixon arms policy i…

  • Guarantees and Nuclear Spread

    Open Access•Michael Sherman•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1966

Ideas, like most other things, pass in and out of fashion. Once an idea has become unfashionable, it is difficult to get anyone to take it seriously again. This seems to have happened to the suggestion that security guarantees are useful means of controlling nuclear spread. While acknowledging that the guarantee concept is only partial solution, this article attempts to resuscitate it, at least for new round of discussion. high point of the vogue…
