  • Measuring and assessing indeterminacy and variation in the morphology-syntax distinction

    Open Access•Adam J R Tallman, Sandra Auderset•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2023

We provide a discussion of some of the challenges in using statistical methods to investigate the morphology-syntax distinction cross-linguistically. The paper is structured around three problems related to the morphology-syntax distinction: (i) the boundary strength problem; (ii) the composition problem; (iii) the architectural problem. The boundary strength problem refers to the possibility that languages vary in terms of how distinct morpholog…

  • A desmemic architecture for autotyp

    Open Access•Adam J R Tallman•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2022

Jeff Good's The linguistic typology of templates develops a typological approach to investigating templatic structures. The notion of a 'template' is a polysemous term covering a wide array of structural relations. For Good the core concept unifying different notions of template is that they represent "surprising" instances of linear stipulation. While some notion of linear order has played a part in different typological projects (e.g. word orde…

  • Constituency and coincidence in Chácobo (Pano)

    Open Access•Adam J R Tallman•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2021

This paper provides a detailed description of the results of 24 constituency diagnostics, both morphosyntactic and phonological, to Chácobo, a southern Pano language of the northern Bolivian Amazon. While it is often assumed that misalignments across the domains that emerge from constituency diagnostics can be resolved by reference to a distinction between phonological and morphosyntactic words, I argue that this is not true of Chácobo. Divergenc…

  • Beyond grammatical and phonological words

    Open Access•Adam J R Tallman•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 30

This paper reviews recent research on the cross-linguistic comparison of wordhood domains. A prominent solution to misalignments in wordhood domains is to distinguish between grammatical (morphosyntactic, morphological) words and phonological (prosodic) words. Recent studies reveal problems with this solution insofar as it is meant to serve as a basis for cross-linguistic comparison. Language-internal divergences within morphosyntactic domains an…
