  • Interdecadal Dynamics in the Chemodiversity of Soil Dissolved Organic Matter After the Conversion of Chinese Fir Plantations to Citrus Orchard

Open Access•Junquan Chen, Yanqi Guo et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in soil biogeochemical processes and affects the responses of soil organic matter (SOM) to agricultural practices. However, the effect of converting forests to intensive orchards on the chemodiversity of soil DOM remains poorly understood. In this study, we systematically investigated molecular‐scale transformations in soil DOM resulting from the conversion of Chinese fir ( Cunninghamia lanceol…

  • Obstruent voicing and devoicing in the English of Cantonese speakers from Hong Kong

    Open Access•Long Peng, Jean Ann•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2004•References: 3

This study offers a description and analysis of consonant voicing and devoicing in the L2 English of Cantonese speakers from Hong Kong. Focusing on stem‐final voiced obstruents in distinct structural environments, we find that the rates of voicing and devoicing vary with the environment. Stem‐final obstruents are more likely to devoice in prevoiceless and word‐final positions than in prevocalic and pre‐sonorant positions. Our analysis reveals a s…

  • Stress and duration in three varieties of English

    Open Access•Long Peng, Jean Ann•ARTICLE•World Englishes•2001•Cited by: 3

This paper investigates stress placement in the English of Spanish speakers, Nigerian English and Singapore English. This investigation reveals that they have in common several patterns of stress placement that are distinct from British or American English. We show that these patterns cannot be accounted for by transfer. A different explanation is suggested, one that explains the recurrent patterns in terms of English vowel duration. It is propos…

  • The emergence of systematicity in the English pronunciations of two Cantonese-speaking adults in Hong Kong

    Long Peng, Jane Setter•ARTICLE•English World-Wide A Journal of…•2000•Cited by: 7

This paper describes and analyses the phenomenon of consonant cluster simplification in the English of two native Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong. We show that this process is systematic in that it targets the alveolar plosives and removes them when they are members of a coda consonant cluster in spite of the fact that the details of the simplification may vary from subject to subject. We compare this process to a seemingly similar cluster simpli…

  • Voice asymmetry in Ewe nouns

    Open Access•Long Peng•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•1995

I argue in this paper that the consonantal influence on tone is highly limited, restricting itself to the tone of the vowel immediately following the onset. This point is demonstrated via Ewe High Tone Insertion, which is blocked by a voiced obstruent if the insertion targets the initial vowel following the onset, but not if the insertion targets the second vowel of a bimoraic syllable. This result confirms a number of earlier studies which show …

  • Swati and Kikuyu reduplication evidence against exhaustive copy

    Open Access•Long Peng•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•1991

This paper addresses the central question of deriving shape-invariance of partial reduplication in two competing models of reduplication: Selective Copy [McCarthy and Prince 1986, 1988, and 1990] and Exhaustive Copy [Steriade 1988]. I show that the core difference lies in the fact that whereas Selective Copy favors prosodic templates, Exhaustive Copy selects parameters defined in terms of prosodic units. This distinction is examined against Swati…
