  • Labrador Inuttut Inverted Number Marking

    Open Access•Lawrence R Smith•ARTICLE•Études/Inuit/Studies•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 3

There is a fascinating and prima facie perplexing patterning in Inuttut, the Labrador dialect of Inuktitut, wherein the quite regular markers of singular and plural in verbal inflectional markers appear inverted in second person forms. This study examines aspects of a major research tradition in sociology which developed from Seeman's classic work on the meanings of alienation. It argues that the Powerlessness Scale contains an unintended, latent ideological content (one that was excluded in Seeman's delineation of alienation's meanings through his translation of alienation theory into the language of Rotter's social learning theory). However, the Powerlessness Scale that was d…

  • Labrador Inuttut (Eskimo) and the Theory of Morphology

    Lawrence R Smith•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•1982

In this paper Aronoff s theory of word formation is discussed in the context of polysynthetic structures. In several areas Eskimo demonstrates characteristics that would be unexpected from the largely Indo-European perspective which Aronoff adopts. In general LI word formation exhibits a high level of regularity and productivity. This may be attributed to the involvement of syntactic rather than lexical rules in the generation of LI wordforms. Sy…
