Pragmatics for Latin
Latin Word Order
Reading a paragraph of Latin without attention to the word order entails losing access to a whole dimension of meaning, or at least using inferential procedures to guess at what is actually overtly encoded in the syntax. This book introduces the linguistic concepts, formalism, and analytical techniques necessary for the study of Latin word order. It then presents and analyzes a representative selection of data in sufficient detail to foster both …
Discontinuous Syntax
The interface between syntax and meaning, both semantic and pragmatic, has emerged as perhaps the richest and most fascinating area of current linguistics theory. This study applies some of these ideas to hyperbaton, offering an original new theory with broad applications for our understanding of Greek syntax. Students of epic will find a fresh perspective on orality in Homer while the general classicist will discover a more precise and explicit …

The Prosody of Greek Speech
Variation and change in symbol systems
Archaeological study of cognitive systems ‘Cognition’ refers to the representation of knowledge and to the processes operating on those representations; a ‘cognitive archaeology’ would investigate aspects of knowledge representation and information processing which are recoverable from the archaeological record. This chapter is part of a workshop on the scientific directions which such investigations might take. The workshop within which these di…
The Prosody of Greek Speech
The reconstruction of the prosody of a dead language is, on the face of it, an almost impossible undertaking. However, once a general theory of prosody has been developed from reliable data in living languages, it is possible to exploit texts as sources of answers to questions that would normally be answered in the laboratory. In this work, the authors interpret the evidence of Greek verse texts and musical settings in the framework of a theory o…

Nasal + Obstruent Clusters in Hittite
Tribrach-Shaped Words in the Tragic Timeter
THE SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS on syllables appearing in resolved positions have long been a major topic in Greek metrics, and justifiably so, since they are crucial not only for philologically exact descriptions but also for a proper understanding of the very nature of Greek metre. In this paper, we shall discuss one of these restrictions, namely the following rule governing tribrach-shaped words in the tragic trimeter
Lateinische Laut- und Formenlehre
The Homeric Hexameter and a Basic Principle of Metrical Theory
The abstractness of metrical patterns
The Myth of the "Lex de Positione Debili" and a Fundamental Question in Metrical Theory
Phonological rules and structural constraints
Indirect Questions in Old Latin
In Old Latin the original indicative of a direct question is not universally shifted into the subjunctive to form an indirect question. Sometimes modal shift occurs, e.g. PI. Merc. 103, vosmet videte quam mihi valide placuerit, and sometimes it does not, e.g. PI. Pseud. 18, face me certum quid tibist. (cf. Cic. Fac me certiorem quando adfuturus sis). Can particular conditions be discerned that favor modal shift? Are there rules governing modal sh…
