Methods: The analysis employed a utility optimization model of residents' medical consumption. Parameters were estimated via kernel density estimation, …
Impact of Salinity on Straw Conversion Into Different Soil Organic Carbon Fractions: Evidences From a 13 C ‐Labeling Incubation Experiment
Although straw is widely used to ameliorate saline soils, the impact of salinity on straw conversion into soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions remains unclear. Our aim was to explore how soil salinity affected straw conversion into SOC. A 180‐day soil incubation with 13 C‐labeling maize straw was conducted to investigate straw conversion into free particulate organic carbon (fPOC), occluded particulate organic carbon (oPOC), and mineral‐associated…

Belief in a diversity–meritocracy trade-off
Organizations and academic institutions often pursue two goals in their selection processes: They seek to uphold a meritocracy wherein the "best" candidates are selected and to increase the diversity of their workforces and student bodies. Across four large, preregistered experiments ( N = 5,805) in laboratory and field settings, we theorize a belief in a diversity-meritocracy trade-off -that efforts to promote diversity in selection processes un…

Childhood abuse and adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: The effects of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis multilocus genetic variation and depression

A humanistic idiom of ‘person-centredness’ was unprecedente…

Sick and stuck at home – how poor health increases electricity consumption and reduces opportunities for environmentally-friendly travel in the United Kingdom
Research on the determinants of direct and indirect energy use has identified a range of relevant socio-economic factors. However, we still know little about possible influences of people's health on their energy use. Do people in poor health use less energy because they are on lower incomes, or do they have additional domestic energy needs as they spend more time at home? Does poor health reduce mobility for all or just some (environmentally-fri…

Mortality from Unspecified Unintentional Injury among Individuals Aged 65 Years and Older by U.S. State, 1999–2013
The proportion of unintentional injuries among older adults with unspecified cause decreased significantly for many states in the United States from 1999 to 2013. The reduced proportion of unspecified injury has implications for research and practice. It should be considered in state-level trend analysis during 1999-2013. It also suggests comparisons between states for specific injury mortality should be conducted with caution, as large differenc…

Moreover, tight IDNs do not temporarily achieve capacity b…
Financial transfers from adult children and depressive symptoms among mid-aged and elderly residents in China - evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study
Financial transfers from non-co-resident children are associated with depressive symptoms among mid-aged and elderly residents in the China situation. Taxation and other policy measures should encourage and facilitate these type of financial transfers and prevent a decrease of support from children to parents
Affect Heuristic and Format Effect in Risk Perception
The affect heuristic can evoke a format effect so that different ways of expressing the level of likelihood of an event happening can cause different perceptions of the level of risk. We conducted 3 studies to test the hypothesis that a format effect is not always present at every level of probability, and even when a format effect occurs, it depends on risk level and emotion. In Study 1, the risk of a flood threatening participants' homes (famil…

City-wide building height determination using light detection and ranging data
The research presented in this paper addresses a current gap in the availability of building geometry data and provides estimates of individual building characteristics at city scale. Such data are crucial for a wide range of subjects such as modelling building energy consumption as well as regional housing market studies. However, such data are currently not available in the UK. In this work, a new approach was developed to automatically estimat…
The Influence of Innovation Resources in Higher Education Institutions on the Development of Sci-Tech Parks’ Enterprises in the Urban Innovative Districts at the Stage of Urbanization Transformation
Innovation is an inevitable way to enhance regional competitiveness, promote urbanization and achieve sustainable development. This study focused on the correlation between the jobs–housing relationship and the innovative development of STPs, adopting the H…
Comparative Toxic Effects of Manufactured Nanoparticles and Atmospheric Particulate Matter in Human Lung Epithelial Cells
Although nanoparticles (NPs) have been used as simplified atmospheric particulate matter (PM) models, little experimental evidence is available to support such simulations. In this study, we comparatively assessed the toxic effects of PM and typical NPs (four carbonaceous NPs with different morphologies, metal NPs of Fe, Al, and Ti, as well as SiO 2 NPs) on human lung epithelial A549 cells. The EC50 value of PM evaluated by cell viability assay w…

To achieve this, we employed Multi-temporal Landsat data to monitor the study area’s LULC pattern and land surface temperature (L…
Impact of Parthanatos on the Increased Risk of Onset and Mortality in Male Patients With Pulmonary Hypertension
There have been no studies as to whether parthanatos, a poly (adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1)-dependent and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF)-mediated caspase-independent programmed cell death, is present in pulmonary hypertension (PH). Basic studies have, however, been conducted on several of the key molecules in parthanatos, such as PARP-1, AIF, and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF). For this study, we collected blo…
Cantonese Businessmen and Lingnan & National Market System: Dialogue With J. K. Fairbank and G. William Skinner
"Impact-response model" by J. K. Fairbank and "physiographic macro-regions of China" by G. William Skinner are the two influencers among international and domestic academic circles. This paper argues that Lingnan & national market systems in China were powered largely by Cantonese businessmen in Ming and Qing dynasties and were generated internally, rather than waiting for the impact from the West. From the social structure of Cantonese businessm…
