  • Class War on Wonga

    Open Access•Derrick Chong•ARTICLE•Journal of Visual Culture•2015

UK activist group Class War’s ‘WAR ON wonga’ campaign is viewed via Boltanski and Chiapello’s critique of capitalism – The New Spirit of Capitalism (2005[1999]) – namely as a form of social critique. Wonga has emerged as the UK’s leading payday loan company since it was founded in 2007, and should be recognized as a product of the culture of financialization. Class War’s campaign is a response to the linkage between inequality and entrepreneurial…

  • Biotech aesthetics

    Anne Byerley, Derrick Chong•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Advances in biotechnology include contemporary artists working in laboratories to create living and semi-living works of art. This paper offers an account of how bio art can be read as an emerging contemporary art practice of the early twenty-first century. This draws on the art-historical precedent of Marcel Duchamp, who transformed objects from commonplace existence into works of art, and contemporary theories of art. Empirical data, in the for…

  • Institutions Trust Institutions Critiques by Artists of the BP/Tate Partnership

    Open Access•Derrick Chong•ARTICLE•Journal of Macromarketing•2013

This article reevaluates the ethics of arts sponsorship by multinational capitalism as one consequence of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico catastrophe. Tate’s partnership with BP is the focus of scrutiny. BP is cast as not being socially responsible, with Tate drawn into a carbon-based economy of cultural institutions that lend weight to Big Oil. Attention is devoted to why and how artists traveling under the flag of institutional critique—Hans Haacke and…

Such a variety of voices follows Negri [2009. Art and Multitude: Nine Letters on Art, Followed by Metamorphoses: Art and Immaterial Labour. Translated by E. Emery. Cambridge,…

  • Why critical writers on the arts and management matter

    Derrick Chong•ARTICLE•Studies in Cultures Organizations…•2000

The focus of the paper is to put forward the case that critical perspectives on the relationship between the arts and management deserve greater attention. Three cultural critics (beyond the conventional management pale) have questioned the growing managerialist orientation of arts organizations. Raymond Williams has been concerned with the spread of the consumer ideal into non-commercial fields. Hans Haacke has drawn attention to the complex rel…
