  • Secular variation of the geomagnetic field in Sub-Saharan Africa over the last millennia

Gwenaël Hervé, Lamya Khalidi et al.•ARTICLE•2026

Instrumental observations highlight that intertropical Africa is one of the areas with the most rapid changes in the modern geomagnetic field. The secular variation beyond the last centuries is poorly known due to lack of data, this large region representing only 0.7% of the GEOMAGIA50 database. The resulting large uncertainties in global geomagnetic models in this area make in particular the history of the present South Atlantic anomaly unclear.…

  • Hydro-climatic fluctuations and their impact on Lake Abhe environments (Ethiopia & Djibouti)

Carlo Mologni, Laurent Bruxelles et al.•PREPRINT•2021

lt;p>Throughout the last 14 ka, tropical Africa experienced significant hydrological changes that were mainly driven by the orbital precession cycle, which controls the intensity of the African monsoon. Recent studies conducted in lake and deltaic sedimentary records suggest that long-term monsoon humid oscillations (African Humid Period / AHP ~14 – ~6 ka) were punctuated by centennial-scale episodes of hyperaridity. However, the abrupt or gradua…

Open Access•Hala Alarashi, Lionel Gourichon et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The burials at the Neolithic cemetery Kadruka 23 in Sudan have yielded adornments and bone and lithic artefacts that occur as distinct stages of the chaîne opératoire. This article reports on a hitherto unrecognised funerary practice that highlights the importance of craftsmanship for Neolithic communities in life and beyond

Recent studies conducted in lake and deltaic sedimentary records suggest that gradual long-term monsoon humid oscillations (African Humid Period ~14 – ~6 ka) were punctuated by centennial-scale episodes of hyperaridity (HS1, YD, 8.2 ka, 4.2 ka). As a result of a programme devoted to obsidian geochemical analyses for the Red Sea region ( VAPOR ), the register of analysed obsidian artefacts from Arabia has grown considerably in recent years.
