Examining the Role of Rehearsals in Preservice Teachers’ Mathematics-Related Teaching Identity Development
This study explores the development of elementary preservice teachers’ (PSTs’) mathematics-related teacher identity through participation in rehearsals as a practice-based pedagogical tool. Data were collected from two cohorts of PSTs: one cohort engaged in rehearsals, and the other did not. Using a single-item identity measure, we quantitatively analyzed shifts in PSTs’ identities and qualitatively examined the reasons underlying these shifts. F…
“I Have Invested in These Twenty-Eight Kids and They’re Mine”
Teacher-student relationships (TSRs) are crucial for enhancing academic achievement and supporting the overall school adjustment of students from diverse backgrounds and low-income communities. This study explores elementary teachers’ motivation and practices to build strong TSRs with Latinx students over time. Step into another’s shoes
Teacher empathy, which is critical in meeting students’ diverse needs and backgrounds, has been commonly conceptualised with respect to cognitive and emotional capacity. Recognising the significance of an action dimension in empathy, this study aims to investigate how teachers who teach in culturally-diverse classrooms translate their understanding of, and emotional connection with, their students into altruistic actions. Participants included tw…
Wellbeing under threat
The purpose of this study was to better understand threats to the wellbeing of multiply marginalised and underrepresented (MMU) teachers by unpacking the ways their multiple social identities intersect with each other and with their teacher identities. This study foregrounded the eudaimonic aspect of wellbeing, examining the extent to which the participants’ needs for relatedness, autonomy, and competence are met within school systems that tend t…
The Wrong Tools for the Job
This case study investigates how teachers in a school with a large population of low-income students of color in the U.S. perceived students' cultural capital and associated teachers' roles. Twenty-seven teachers were interviewed and discussed four domains of cultural capital mismatch between students and teachers: behavioral, experiential, academic, and family norm. Teachers often characterized these misalignments as students' deficits and under…

The Role of Trust
The purpose of this research is to examine teachers’ capacities and the role trust plays in the professional lives of teachers during the transition to a new team of three administrators in an elementary school located in a low-income urban community in the U.S. Twenty-seven teachers’ surveys and interviews showed that the transition caused some level of instability and uncertainty; however, teachers had a positive sense of efficacy, social capit…
Students’ Academic Use of Mobile Technology and Higher-Order Thinking Skills
The academic use of mobile technology engages students beyond traditional classroom contexts. Over the past few years, higher education institutions have promoted students’ learning and growth by supporting their use of mobile technology. Mobile technology offers educational possibilities that can enhance students’ growth in higher education. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between college students’ academic use of mobile tec…
The school of hard knocks
The mindset and motivation that teachers demonstrate are likely to influence their students’ mindset and motivation. While mindset and motivation of in-service teachers have been investigated thoroughly, the same cannot be said of pre-service teachers. Pre-service teachers’ mindset and motivation are likely developed during in-class experiences or practicum, the latter seen as the defining experience of pre-service teachers’ preparation. Understa…

Why do some beginning teachers leave the school, and others stay? Understanding teacher resilience through psychological lenses
With the increasing concern about the high attrition rate among beginning teachers, it is essential that we come to a better understanding of why teachers leave the profession. This study explored differences between leavers and stayers in terms of the process of their resilience responses. Major psychological factors such as value, self-efficacy, beliefs and emotions were foregrounded to understand how leavers and stayers are similar or differen…
An ecological examination of teachers' emotions in the school context
In the Pause and Listening to the Little People
This article employs a qualitative case study approach to describe the views and perspectives of a folk healer (White Bear) regarding spiritual healing. White Bear argues for a mobile, in-the-moment form of diagnosis and a “pause,” in which the mind ceases to tyrannize and the healer is no longer absorbed in his or her emotions. He contends that a healer can benefit from aligning with spirits (he calls them Little People) who can help achieve the…
